Also you didn't mention the sound and M HUD but to me those contribute to significantly better driver engagement on the M5. I had difficulty using paddles because the car was so quiet and HUD lacks rpm on the 550.

One question - any tips on maximizing value recovery on the 550i? What did you get for it? Where? Please PM me.

I haven't used the HUD significantly yet. I do not have HUD on my 550, but have had it on previous M models. I does look great - probably the best I have seen in terms of brightness, resolution and clarity. It clearly is reflective of BMW quality and technology to date.

I assume when you mention "sound" that you are referring to the sound that the car makes and not the audio system. The 550 and the M5 cannot be more different in this area. This is probably the only disappointing thing about the 550. It is almost a silent car - while driving and idling. Even when you push it, it does not have much of an audible personality. I thought my older E60 550 (2007) that I owned had a nicer engine sound to it by far. This is one of the things I love about previous M models. Having had 2 E90 M3's - I believe that they were/are the best sounding cars produced by BMW. I just loved to hear the S65 idle. The 550 is dull in this area, enough said. The M5 sounds great inside and outside of the car. Not in the same way as the M3, but terrific nonetheless. You know that there is something special under the hood. I know that there have been a number of people bellyaching about the "artificial" sound that is piped into the sound system. You might also find many people stating that they did not notice it after actually driving the car. I go on record to say the same. If this simulated sound is occurring, BMW has done very well designing this feature, it simply enhances the existing sound that the car makes. It really sounds great in the car. Driving the car you will also hear the whining of the transmission/differential throughout the cabin as you accelerate - truly music to your ears! It all works well together, adding to the experience.
Oh boy. I rather having a silent beast. I like the way BMW silent out their cars these days. Firstly there is less noise pullout ion. Secondly I like the idea of big dogs don't bark.
Still I understand lots of people like old school.
Nice Monrovia ! My f10 is from there too=)

I agree, they definitely are very similar cosmetically. This was why I originally went with the 550 M Sport. As far as gas mileage - yes, it is still not a Prius. The gas guzzler tax is a slight drawback. You have to consider a few things though - the car is more powerful with significantly more horsepower and torque than the E60 M5 - and BMW did manage to improve the fuel economy while accomplishing this. In the words of Richard Hammond - "there are jet aircraft that are more fuel efficient than the old M5." When BMW said it is 30% better than the outgoing E60, 30% of 10 mpg is only 3 mpg.

Great writeup, OP. I'm quite disappointed, though, that the M5 actually sits higher than a normal 5er. I know it has bigger wheels but still...

I might be the only one here, but i like the 550i msport front more than the m5. the m5s has a more curvy appearance and i really like the angles the 550i has. I like how the lower grill opens up towards the top instead of the opposite for the m5

Wow, thanks for the comparison pictures between the 550i and the M5! I think the M5 looks light years better than the 550i. Plus just looking at those two engine bays, the M5 definitely has an ///M engine! It looks way more robust and high performance than the 550i.

Also sweet minivan in the background!

Its interesting to see how much further back in the chassis the M5's engine sits than in the 550i...pretty interesting.

I'm sure the M5's gearbox is a much smaller unit, and thus allowing a better placement of the engine.

Awesome car, looks great. This always makes me wonder why BMW makes so many god damn cars. 550i m sport looks so close to an m5 its crazy. I wish they would focus more on one car then making so many different models that look alike.

Take a look at the M-sport E9X and M3. There is a massive difference between the two. Essentially, the M3 is an entirely different car. M-sport is still aggressive, but there is a fine line between two cars. The difference between M-sport E60 and the old M5 is even more drastic.

I think the problem with the 5er this time is BMW made the M-sport too aggressive, and the M5 doesn't look anything more than that. It's not that the car looks bad, its just that M5 does not look like anything that justifies the 20-30k price difference. It's really the fault of 550, not the other way around.
Whole point of the M5 is that the visual differences are supposed to be subtle. Hard to notice until you press the gas pedal. That has always been the case with the M5 and not so with the M3.
Remember the "sheeps clothing" part? It is sheeps clothing.

I noticed the same thing, I thought the M models are usually 10mm lower than standard cars? Or is it the bigger wheels in this case?

Congrats on the purchase!

It is amazing how much of a difference the black grilles make to the car. The front has a completely different tone to it because of that.

Enjoy!

Excellent write up thanks a ton for that! It appears that not only the front fenders look wider but in your pics the rears do too.

Also, I don't understand the black under the side mirrors. It should just go straight across like many people have done that wrap the bottom half of their mirrors.

I have the 550i M-sport and plan on doing the same and going to the M5. Just not for a year or so. I would still do most of the stuff to the M5 that I've done to my 550i though. The height is still too tall, I'd put suspension on it. And I'd put an exhaust on it and somehow find a way to remove the fake sound. It's great that you can't really tell but I just personally feel that invention is one of the lamest in automobile history. Other than that I love every aspect of the M5.

Again, great write up and enjoy your car. Post back once you can really get into it.

Nice looking M5!!... Funny I bought my e60 550 at Monrovia, not what I expected from a service level standpoint I hate that dealership. They repainted my rims and got overspray all over my black car. They told me I should wax it and it will be fine. I pretty much ripped apart the GM one afternoon.

Since you have a M series car they will treat you like a celebrity :-)
