Engine oil difference
My car is at 8000kms, and it reminds me to change engine oil, so I took it to the dealer.
This time they used 0W-40, instead of 5W-30 as recommended, first impression after I get my car back, it felt so much lighter, especially at low speed, is smoother and much more responsive, also the time taken to operating temperature is shorter I am not sure what this does to engine wear and demage, what do you guys use? |

Hi all, I'm not an expert on this subject, but does this video shows that the BMW 0W-30 is better than Castrol 0W-30?
I've always heard that the Castrol 0W-30 is better, but I can see that the BMW oil boils faster, but burns cleaner than the Castrol at the end?

I suspect your dealer installed Mobil1 0W-40 which is also a BMW approved oil and highly regarded. I would however choose Mobil1 0W-40 over BMW 5W-30 any day. These 0W oils are much better because they provide better cold start protection and also faster warm up to operating temperature.

Here is the approved oil grade list ...
http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=766056 since Castrol have different variation of their 0W30, I buy only the one that says "Made in Germany" at the back of the bottle and the front says "European Formula". Do note on the video that the test was using Castrol Edge Professional but does not say it's A5 or A3 ... as A5 is NOT on the approved list. The approved list specify A3 [QUOTE=Orich;14538438]Hi all, I'm not an expert on this subject, but does this video shows that the BMW 0W-30 is better than Castrol 0W-30? Dumb question. I have always let The dealer change my oil. If they have been using BMW 5W-30 oil. When I have add oil (the add oil message pops up), can I add and mix this Castrol 0W-30 with the existing 5W-30 oil? Does it hurt?
