BMW NA Reports Q2 2022 U.S. Sales Results

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
Quote:
In the second quarter of 2022, BMW brand sales in the U.S. totaled 78,905 vehicles, a 18.3% decrease from the 94,144 vehicles sold in the record-setting second quarter of 2021.

While supply constraints continued to impact inventory availability, high demand for BMW Sports Activity Vehicles and increased allocation from the company’s U.S. plant in Spartanburg, SC led to year-over-year growth of BMW X5 (+15.1%) and BMW X7 (+18.3%) sales, and an overall increase of 4.6% in the light truck segment vs Q2 2021. In total, sales of BMW’s U.S.-built Sports Activity Vehicles are up 9.8% when compared to the first half of 2021.

Despite single digit day supply, sales of BMW’s newest fully electric vehicles also continue to grow, with nearly 1,500 BMW iX Sports Activity Vehicles and more than 1,100 BMW i4 Gran Coupe models now on U.S. roads since they first began arriving in late March.

“We are pleased that demand remains strong, however this quarter was not without its challenges, as our sales were constricted only by the limitations of available inventory,” said Sebastian Mackensen, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “Since the arrival of the iX and i4 in market this past March, it is clear that enthusiasm for BMW electric vehicles is here to stay. In April, we hosted the world premiere of the first-ever, fully electric BMW i7, to rave reviews from dealers, customers, and press. We look forward to launching this incredible vehicle later this year.”

The X5 45e is the bread and butter around my dealership. They're sold before they even have paint on the frame.

I'd like to see a comparison in profits rather than cars sold

They won't report Q2 earnings until early August.

-20% sales from the same quarter in 2021? What's goin on there?

Lots are empty. Are they just having that hard of a time getting cars in dealer hands?

PS - Somebody still had an i8 in inventory?!?

Really impressive growth on the X7. High volume, high margin.

No surprises really, its a luxury family hauling, not so gas guzzling, ass massaging monster.

Post pandemic BMW dealers had good physical inventory through first half of 2021. Q4 2021 is when inventory issues started to show. Dealers went into 2022 with little to no physical inventory. They are not alone with terrible YOY units sales. Selling low volume at high prices vs volume with discounts is saving the auto industry.

A big part also has to do with the outrageous markups and horrid lease rates/incentives which are forcing many to buy out their current lease versus getting a new replacement.

I believe that's coming for Q3 and onward but don't think that is factored into Q2. I think the drop, at least for BMW is because of restrictions and production. Remember, BMW was one of the last manufacturers to start restrictions on options because of agreements or they just had parts/chips vs. everyone else but now that the shortage finally caught up to him, we see it in the numbers.

We're buying out our 2020 M340, currently paying $711 with only 25k miles. I really wanted to get into an x3m or M3 but couldn't justify. We'll hold off till it's more favorable.

Buying out my 2021 F97 X3MC and skipping over LCI until G97 release. I am not alone.

Bmw quit claiming production issues. Less than a year ago you were one of the manufactures that had production under control.

Just admit you screwed up on the design of the new models.
The 4 looks like an a5 from 2012z
The XM honestly… anything but that
IX good tech, but make it appealing.

All these skinny/double lights. Yes it's here to stay, but that's the cause of your sales loss… not production.

It's sad when the g80 only looks good in black….

Maybe it's (lower sales) are testament to their wonderful redesigns?!?! Proof is in the pudding!

But hey, what do I know...

There's an old saying "if it isn't broke, don't fix it"

Funniest thing is they broke it, now they'll need to fix it!

And maybe, just maybe, be smarter and provide the same level of function and tech across model lines and stop dumbing things down! Offer the best of what you got, don't hold back! And don't forget to fire your design teams!

Huh? Not a design commentary, design is subjective but your analysis is way off the numbers.

the 4 series is up YOY

The most traditional conservative designs, 3 and 5 series, are bleeding the most

X5 and x7 leading the growth curve (big grill memes apparently lead to big sales growth?)

Yeah it's a compelling package to us, too. We had a Chevy volt years ago and loved the mileage (>250 mpg) and flexibility not to worry about charging on longer drives.

I'm not bashing on the grilles, just in general. Look at previous designs, compared to today. I get it cars evolve. But the older bmws keep me more interested than the new ones.

The split headlights I think work on the new 7… but the split headlight reminds me of the Hyundai Kona.

Supply chain issues due to Ukraine are real. We had an X3 delayed 2 months.

Mercedes Benz C-class was delayed until last spring and just now hitting dealer lots.

My point was sales don't reflect the commentary you put forth. This is a sales results driven thread.
