Suggested Cooling & Maintenance Mods?
These S63TU's get hot as all hell under the hood which is never good - What are some suggested mods for our cars to keep them running cool and healthy?
Coming from a VR30 Q50 platform, we'd typically set the car up with additional coolant expansion tanks behind the fenders. As well as upgrading the heat exchanger to a larger one that can hold more coolant. Anything like that for S63TU motors? Anything besides Charge air coolers?

It doesn't help when driving, but when I get home and parked in the garage I open the hood and put a box fan in front of the car on hot days.

If you are talking about engine bay temps:
1. Downpipes. 2. Turbo blanket by PTP. 3. You can use maxcool option in your tune. If you are talking about charge air temps: 1. Upgraded charge air coolers. 2. Charge coolers cooled via A/C compressor. 3. Methanol injection, water injection or mix between both. |

Run the car in Sport Plus at the end of your drive for a few minutes and it helps cool the engine to a lower set point.
If you watch the actual temp readings in the cluster, these don't run "that" hot, especially driving it easy in Sport Plus before ending your drive. |

Similar to the above, if I'm not already in Sport Plus throttle I will switch to it a few minutes out from my destination. coolant temp drops from 103-105c down to 85-87c. If I'm parking at home, I also open the hood all the way.

Thank you guys these are all really good tips! Those PTP turbo blanket is cool as shit, definitely placing an order. Looks like I should heat wrap my downpipes too.

I have been seriously thinking about a turbo blanket as well. As I near 100k miles I'm also thinking about a cooling system overhaul. Fun fun.

It's worth opening the bonnet for about ten minutes after a hot run on the driveway to let it cool down (from where you can see it) I balance the hood halfway up so that it doesn't show it's open from the street.

Yeah I hear removing cats(downpipes) is the single biggest thing you can do.

My biggest concern with the turbo blanket is it seems like it would end up holding in a ton of very hot air in the V of the block and on the heads. I get turbo blanks on traditionally-placed turbos, but I'd be hesitant with a hot-v.

If you're really feeling adventurous, contact Fabworx and order a set of their catless downpipes for the F10 M5 and ask them to spray it in Cerakote C-7600 formula. Cerakote C-7600 will take about a week to cure before they can ship it to you, but it is worth the wait. They only charged me $40 USD more to add the Cerakote C-7600 onto their downpipes they made me. The Cerakote ceramic C-7600 formula is one of the highest performing heat containment ceramic spray on paints you can get. eBay: FABWorx Cerakote C7600 Ceramic Coated Downpipes for BMW M5 F10 & M6 F12 & F13 Now take those downpipes and wrap them in PTP Turbo Blankets' Quartz Exhaust Wrap, and add their S63tu turbo blanket, and you'll be amazed at the results. Don't forget to buy the correct number of stainless steel locking ties to secure the wrap around your down pipes, as well as to help secure the turbo blanket around the turbos. If you replicate my order, you should end up with exactly what you need for the F10 M5 S63tu. I've included a list of parts that I ordered. The number of locking ties is exact. I used 16 of the 15 inch ties around each down pipe; (16 x 2 = 32 pack). For the turbo blanket, it has 4 loop rings on the corners. I used 4 of the 21 inch ties to secure the turbo blanket; (one pack of 4). For the quartz wrap, I purchased 50 feet of the 2 inch width wrap. I then cut it in half and used 25 feet exactly for each down pipe. Product Description, PTP Turbos Part Number, Qty & Line Total Price
You'll be amazed at the results. I can now drive my M5 hard for 3 hours, shut off the engine and immediately pop the hood, and place my hand onto the metal shield above the radiator and hold it there indefinitely without so much as even getting the sensation of feeling hot. Before I added these heat management products, I couldn't even stand to hold my hand on the metal surface there for more than a split second, as it was searing hot and would leave me with a blister and burn. Now, I can hold my hand on it indefinitely. The hot water coming out of your shower at home will be hotter than the metal shield now. If you're interested in heat management, you'll be impressed with the results. I'm still blown away by how much of a difference it made. It's one of those things that once you do it, you'll wonder why you didn't do it sooner. I only wish I had bought an IR thermometer to take the temperature in places around the engine bay for before and after comparisons. The numbers would have been nice to have.

Not at all. It actually can prolong their life through ensuring more consistent temperatures and less temperature swing while operating.

Before and after the PTP turbo blanket I believe. Maybe heat wrap on the downpipes as well, can't remember exactly.
