I did tell her I was headed to see a car at a dealership. I did not go with the intent to buy it, but then if I wasn't looking to buy, why did I go in the first place!? When I saw it, I was like, "OMG, I've got to have it!" I called my wife and told her that I was going to trade in my car and buy another. I did not bring it home until a few days later. She was still pissed off to say that Yas Marina Blue was a horrible color...

I know if I had bought a Porsche two-seater, it would have been a lot worse.
I'm 55, been together with her for 29 years and I'm extremely happy to have her.
My recipe: find a beautiful and smart woman, and work hard to keep her.

On a similar note, don't buy your wife a car and surprise her with it. A friend of mine told me he was going to do it. She hadn't asked for a new car. She liked her car fine. He just saw a C-class Mercedes and thought he would buy it for her. He's at the dealer when he calls me to ask me what I think. I suggested that he hold off on the purchase and take his wife down there to look at and test drive the car first. I said, "have the salesperson put a bow on it for you and bring her down to take a look, but don't actually buy the car until she gives the thumbs up. He ignored me and bought it anyway.

She hated that car; the size, the ride, the color, everything. More than that, she hated that she didn't get her input on such an important purchase. He was trying to do a nice thing. She wasn't mad at him and she appreciated him wanting to do something nice, she just hated the car. She drove it for 6 months and sold it to buy a car she liked, which happened to be a BMW. She bought a X5 and loved it. He liked her X5 so much he bought 650i. They are now a BMW family.

I have always just told my DW what I'm thinking about buying, and let her do the searching for me since she actually enjoys the process. She was a professional mechanic before I met her, and knows exactly what I'm looking for in a vehicle. Happy wife, happy life.....

^^^^^ TRUTH!!!!!!!! ^^^^^

Funny story about how I got my first car as a teen. Our neighbor at the time bought a brand new car for his wife without her input. She hated the car so much that she left him and they got divorced over it! It sat in their driveway for two years and didn't move. When he was moving out of his house after the divorce was finalized, he sold it to me for $300 cash because it destroyed his marriage. Yes, I got an essentially brand new car with a clean title and less than 1,500 miles on it for $300.....

My wife and I have had that conversation, as in "who would do that?" Putting aside someone whose spouse has actually said something like "It's my dream to get a 2025 X and such in black pearl with leather seats and the comfort package, but I know we can't afford it," neither of us could imagine "surprising" the other with a car. We have occasionally asked car sales people we've dealt with if they've ever had anyone buy a car to be delivered on a certain day with the big red bow on it. Not one of them ever has.

Is your wife named Mona Lisa Vito by any chance?

I love my wife, I really do. But she cannot explain positraction or rattle off the firing order of a 327 chevy engine.

...which makes these tips equally valuable to the marriage tip you may get from family members, close friends, or marriage counselors.

We all must take input from various sources and then do what is right for us. Sometime free advice is priceless and sometimes expensive advice is, well, expensive. Personally, I don't think the price has any direct correlation to the value. The value is in using the advice that works for you, regardless of source.

Bringing this whole thing back full-circle, I have said since day one that she can have any car that she wants...as long as she pays for it and maintains it. (I cover the insurance costs.)

When she was at the dealership buying her current car, the salesman risked his life and commission by asking her if she needed to consult with her husband and get my approval before buying the car. He didn't even want to do the paperwork for the sale, I guess because some deals fall apart if a wife buys a car without the husband's input.

I drove her to the dealership to pick it up, and the salesman asked me why I didn't care about what she was buying? My response was those four words, happy wife, happy life. Shockingly, my DW had never heard that saying before! TL;dr - Three days later, there was a custom vinyl decal on the rear window of her new car, and I'll let you figure out what it said.

When we were dating, she told me how she always wanted to have the internals of a GM posi-track rear diff as a display piece but her family and ex-boyfriend said no. One of my racing buddies owns a junkyard, so it only took me a few hours to go find one, crawl around in the snow/mud to grab the guts, and give her the most thoughtful Valentine's Day gift. She put it in a clear basketball trophy case, and it sits on our coffee table to this day as the centerpiece. It's a joke with her family that I'm not shy about letting anyone who visits our house look at my wife's rear end.....

What a great story. Was that differential from a '63 Pontiac Tempest by any chance? Certainly not from a '64 Buick Skylark.

No. It was from a wrecked 1990's Chevy police car.....

Small gifts given outside of holidays and birthdays are usually appreciated. Also dont give her a gift that’s actually for you
