Thicker oil when cold might help oil use, if the engine is burning it when cold...

I worry about these engines and the oil issues, will thicker oil when cold reduce flow and reduce lubrication of the rod bearings etc...?

Yep there is a reason its 0w30

The 0W part is the most vital part, it will flow better when cold and these engines have such tight tolerances they need oil to flow super quickly, people changing to 5W are running a risk.

Totally agree and would not run anything else.

These people know best apparently, leave them to it. I run 0w30 in mine.

Thanks for the reply, What do you think the best brand would be? Creaking seat needs removed!! i'm thinking of stripping it tomorrow and dipping it in some 0w30
I wouldn't touch Castrol or Mobile with a barge pole.
Millers is a very well respected British oil brand amongst those in the know.
Especially popular with Porsche owners.

Nothing wrong with Castrol Edge and this one has Titanium Fluid Strength Technology.FST physically changes the way oil behaves under extreme pressures.
Just what is needed in the tight tolerance S63TU engine.

Do BMW not list 5w30 in the manual as being ok? Cant see them doing that if its going to be bad for the motor, seen plenty threads where the dealer uses it also.
