what product to remove tar (or other difficult to remove gunk)
Heyo,
washed my cash yesterday and noticed what looked like me missing some (light grey) dirty wheel spray on the lower fender. Turns out I didn't miss anything, as after two additional applications of wash and rinse it's (mostly?) still there. Only thing I can think of is me driving on a road that looked like it had been chipsealed a few weeks ago and perhaps the front wheels kicked up dust with some residual seal/tar/whatever that then stuck. or it's something else, but either way it's not easily coming off. I've seen recommendations of lighter fluid, wd-40, isopropyl alcohol, etc. but am unsure what is the best product to remove it w/o damaging the paint. there isn't a lot of it and it's pretty light, but it's definitely there. Thoughts? |

I've used 3M Auto Advanced Adhesive Remover to get rid of gum and other nasty stuff and it works great.
Make sure you work it before it drys.

de-solv-it. it is the best product i've ever found to remove sticky stuff, gunk, grease etc from all sorts of things around the house. It is also natural and safe for clear coats. The contractors version is a bit stronger. I have used it to remove glue from emblems. They sell it at Ace hardware typically.

As an update, I've done multiple attempts with 3M adhesive remove (the auto version) and this stuff doesn't seem to want to come off with it. I think I'm going to get out the big guns and try Citrol 266.

Paint thinner also works, no need to use much. Won't harm the paint.
