They were changed first time at 20000 miles,3 years ago noted in my BMW service book so I'm being diligent and doing them now.
It depends where you live and as far as I know there is no set mileage as such by BMW to change them. They go by inspection, how dirty they are and if the element is turning brittle and at 3 years I'd change them.
Part no,s are Mahle LX 2074 (LH) and LX2075 (RH). OE of course.

Do UK cars have charcoal filters in the air box?

If so what do they do?

Don't think so on UK cars and not expecting to find any when I change them, fitted to all US cars and California cars may have extra charcoal canisters also. Not sure how it benefits engine intake but micro filters have them to stop gases getting into the car.

BMW quoted £56 v £39 for Mahle

Appreciate they are the same thing but not sure how the warranty would be effected if at all

For £17 though OEM is probably easier

On the drivers side how does the air box come away from the bung on the back of the box? Do I just pull it up firmly

I am doing the method where you take the whole box out of the car

Yes just pull it out firmly but make sure you focus most of the pull at the "bung". I just did mine this weekend. It's a 20 minute job. Real simple.

Just ordered from BMW for £49 the pair will fit when they arrive

Glad you mentioned changing them as it wasn't on my radar but after 3 years maybe should have been but only covered 15,000 so not too urgent

Make sure you have a short stubby turning ratchet for the torx screw under the tube pipe before you start.

I was going to use the method where you remove the whole air box from the car then undo each torx bolt

Apparently you still need that mini ratchet stubby even with the box off the car.The space underneath the pipe for the screw there is very limited.

Forgot to mention the only ratchet I have was the mini. Sorry. Did you get it off?

I notice on some M5s the air vent from the bottom is blanked off to stop warm air being drawn from the engine bay

Anyone done this or have any thoughts

Done them.Passengers side you can put back as a whole but drivers side is more tight and the bottom half has to be installed first to locate the inlet pipe to the fixed point slide in using your hand inside right at the bottom, then installing the filter and the top cover and screws etc then not forgetting to connect up the plugs.
They sure needed replacing after just 15k miles, the old ones were black when put up to the sky comparing with the new ones. The mini ratchet was needed for the one screw where the screw driver type could not angle reach holding flex pipe away while it was done up.We see now why BMW charge the labour as it's not that easy.
