Love the technical goodies! Keep up the good work on the M5 modding

Can't wait to hear the full race system once it goes in!

Are you guys planning on doing downpipes as well?

What correction factor are you using?
I've always seen people use 1.21 on BMW's??

E9x M3's typically dyno around 330-340, which works out perfectly.
BMW blown engines are WAY underrated. The N54's seem to be pushing 350 crank HP and the 1M even more. The N55 seem to be putting out a little less than the N54's, but still more than the 300 HP it's listed at.

This engine is CRAZY underrated!! But the torque definitely drops off as the revs go up.
.
.
I'm sure the drivetrain is a little bit more efficient AND the engine is underrated, but one thing's for sure.... If the M6GC comes out with a token "power bump" of 20-30 hp, it will probably be no different than this M5 engine.

Same with the N63 back in 2009..

"According to the lucky crew over at Inside Line, BMW's brand-new 750i managed to put down an impressive 391 horsepower at around 5,500 RPM and 434 lb-ft of torque at about 3,500 RPM." That equates to more like 460hp and 500 ft/lbs at the crank.

Great to see such results, and look frwd to the full IND project work ahead!

Quick question: what options did this M5 have? I am really 'concerned' of the ever increasing weight on the M5, and been entertaining just going with the HUD, 20" wheels (which actually weigh less than the 19s!), and full leather. Anyone weigh a car without the Driver Assistance and Exec package? Wonder how much a bunch of needless (to me) electronics actually add to the weight. If a 'stripper' can be had for 4200 or less, than I can stomach that (maybe even in the 4100s with ceramic breaks). Hoping this 4317 car above has all the bells and whistles.

We ordered the car with no options at all.

With that being said, I would still suggest that our clients follow BMW's suggested break-in procedure simply from a liability and warranty standpoint, but our own M5 will be modified well beyond the point where any future resale is possible, so break-in is not a concern for us.

I do believe that 4th gear's longer operating time on the dyno resulted in a touch more compensation for temperature and heat soak. This is likely why results were inconsistent in 4th. Ultimately our goal was to obtain a repeatable and consistent data set that we can use as a benchmark against future tests.

I would agree. Many of our clients are making well over 500 wheel horsepower on dynojet dynos.
What do you mean by "but our own M5 will be modified well beyond the point where any future resale is possible"? does that mean you will add machine guns and missiles 007 style??

I will say this again. I don't think necessarily that the engines are underrated. I think BMW has made the drivetrains substantially more efficient.
More efficient by how much???
And how would they make these improvements?

What type of dyno was it? Could be a high reading dyno.. So this is all totally believable :/

I believe the standard is 1.15.
So in this case the M5 is generating 606 HP at the crank

I've definitely seen 1.15 used too. I believe that equates to 15% drivetrain loss, where 1.21 is 17%. I see the 15% used more with rear/mid engine cars.

Either way, it's at least 50HP underrated.
