Proper operating oil temp?

Hi all,

Fairly new to the BMW world. What is the proper operating temp for the M5? Would the the first 1/4th mark 200°F be operating temp?

Yep, around 200 in Sport Plus and 215-220 in Efficient. Some have said they've gotten it to 250 at the track.

Great thank you for confirming! I've noticed my short drives too and from work I barely hit the 200 temp. So at cold start I let it go through the cold cycle and then I drive normally to keep RPM below 3k.

You mention 200 in sport and 215-220 in efficient mode. I would think that if driving in sport mode that the operating temp be switched with efficient mode?

sport plus turns on more cooling.

efficient mode is your fastest warmup.

how long does it take for your m5's to get to the half way mark at around 200*F? mine takes over 5-8 miles. i think it's bit too long. i can barely open up the car on a normal commute which blows. if that's abnormal, i'm inclined to change the thermostat.

6mi/10km should get the car up to full operating temp-read that in a BMW owners manual a while back, can't remember which car it was, but it's my gauge before I start to lean on it.

Just to show the change, I let my car warm up to operaring temperature, set all to sport plus and after 10 minutes the temperature dropped.

It does take a while to warm up. I watch the oil temp with torque pro, shift manually to keep the revs down until she's past 170 degrees. I stay under 2000 rpm.
