Buying M5 out of state

Looking at upgrading from my 2007 335I to a 2013 M5. Found one I like in another state CPO with warranty until 6yrs/100,000 miles. Also has maintenance until 6yrs/100,000 miles. I plan on flying to look at it and drive it back to my home state.

Does anyone have any advice on the 2013 M5 and buying from out of states in general?

Thanks

Hey, that described my situation about exactly, 2008 335i to 2013 M5.. Here's the thread where I picked it up a couple months ago:

http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1319666

I would say DO IT! It's a lot bigger car, which I needed. But with the active suspension it drives pretty small when you want. I only got maint for +1 year (not 2) so that sounds like a great deal assuming the price is solid.

I would say you should get them to send a screenshot of the service records for the vehicle and the in-service date. I wouldn't trust/follow the carfax for anything but maybe to look for accident records.

I think a few repairs are normal. All 13's seem to have the coolant lines retrofit, squeaking brakes, something about spark plug wear indicator TSB, etc. Even a few other repairs are fine. You definitely want to see the 1200 mile oil change in there, and then regular oil changes every 10k/1yr about thereafter. good luck!

I bought mine in IL amd drive it back to NY. Just make sure you ask all the right questions. Get as much history on the car as possibly and what repairs has been done to it. If it CPO, you risk is less but doesn't mean your visit to the service center will be. Good luck!

Thanks for the reply and tips for buying an out of state car. You're right, we have very similar circumstances.

Should get more detailed pictures tomorrow. The car looks immaculate from what I can tell from the online pictures. Clean carfax. Maintenance history looks good. Has new tires. Only thing it does not have that I would like is B&O sound system. The price is a steal....especially with the extended warranty and extended maintenance (over $8k value alone), almost seems too good to be true. Hope to be driving this thing back before the new year! 1400 miles........should be fun.

Hope your drive is not in Northwest Northeast Midwest
The rubber on the car will be really squirrelly below 40F and any precip on the ground

The Sandia BMW one has two owners and the first service was done closer to 1600 not 1200.

I purchased my 2015 in Texas and drove it back to Georgia. It was over 1100 miles and it was such fun and somewhat rehabilitating if you know what I mean. Good luck!

As long as its from a BMW dealer, out of state should be ok. I would stay away from 3rd party dealers though. I researched this one year ago and the main issue/complaints with 3rd party dealers was getting the title sent in a timely manner.

Bought mine at a dealer in NC, sight unseen. Was perfect. Have them do a FaceTime next to car.

Purchased mine in Illinois from KC. I was very adamant about all the details and luckily so was the dealer. Ended up getting a pretty mint M5 for a steal. Close ups and live video (FaceTime/skype) will help you make your decision.

My last 2 M5's have been puchased out of state, My old E60 in NH and my current F10 in PA. I always buy CPO if used and always at out of state dealers because NY dealers are delusional sometimes with their pricing.

Soooooo true, they are nuts but there are a lot dumb wealthy people that don't do any cross shopping research and just dive head first into the purchase. In downstate NY there are enough of these buyers to keep the salesman happy and the con much a live.

I see someone noted about the one at Sandia BMW. Is this the one you purchased?

I actually test drove that car. I'm currently in the market for a M5 and saw that one local. I went and drove it.

The car overall seemed in good shape. It drove pretty well but when I drove it was during more traffic and only a few miles. The exterior seemed in decent shape but we had some dusty days the few days before I went and also the dealership is going through a renovation so overall was hard to tell the exact exterior condition but seemed good.

As a fellow M owner I only saw the following to make sure you look at things when you get there and not to make you afraid to buy (none of these are bad just things I noticed)

1. Drivers seat has decent wear, might just be a little dirt in the leather but looked like the drivers seat was worn a little more then it should for the sub 40k miles.
2. The interior does have some marks in areas. Nothing major was mostly around the drivers area as the passenger and rear seats seemed they were never used.
3. The second time i went down was to listen to the stereo as i was undecided on if I wanted to find a car with B&O. When I went out to start the car it showed low battery on the dash. This is prob due to it being on the dealers lot for a few weeks. Just have them check it before you start your journey back.

The reason I didn't go forward with the car was because of the color. My e92 m3 is space grey. I just didn't want to add another grey car to my stable. If the car was MCB or White exterior you possibly wouldn't be buying this as it would already be in my garage.

Hope you also got a decent amount off the car. I told them the first day i went to see and drive it i just didn't love the exterior color. They offered a good amount off the top, told them I just don't want grey. Then a week later they called and gave me another amount off.

Wish you the best and overall seems like a nice car for the limited time I had with it.

Thanks for the info! I did get a good amount off.......well below what similar cars in my area are going for. The extended warranty and maintenace really set it apart for me. I am paying $53,500 plus tax. This car with similar options and miles is just north of $55k non CPO and no extended maintenance.

What did u think of the Premium sound system? I was a little underwhelmed when I heard the B&O, so that was not a deal breaker for me. Thanks for the info on the battery.

Now to figure out which route I should take..........to get back to the NW.

I haven't been able to listen to a B&O sound system yet, but wanted to at least have a base line with the none B&O. Honestly it sounded decent and once you factor in road noise (i only listen to it in the parking lot) it probably is a decent sound system for myself. It may be weak in the bass department but it still sounded pretty good. If the right deal came along and it didn't have it I would probably not make it a deal breaker.

Made it back

Well I made it back. Decided to go west through AZ, Barstow, Bakersfield and then North. Not an easy drive with all the winter conditions, but made it home safe and didn't put the new ride in a ditch. I am blown away by this car and look forward to enjoying it for some time. Thanks to everyone for the feedback on buying from out of state. Everything went very well for me and Kudo's to Sandia BMW in Albuquerque.

Congrats! The drive I did from salt lake city south was awesome, but that was a couple months back. Glad to hear it held up in the weather.
