F10 M5 and F12/F13 M6 Front Brake Pads replacement
Hey guys
I just did a front brake job, trying to get rid of the squealing with aftermarket brake pads, lets hope it does help at least. This is what the brakes setup looks like after taking the rim off Remove the top and bottom pins, just tap it out as shown Remove the nut that is holding the caliper on (14mm) Compress the pads to remove the caliper/pads setup Once the caliper is out, remove the pads, clean the piston area, lube the contact points and install the new pads. Everything else is pretty much reverse of installation, its pretty easy! |

Nice DIY. Much appreciated. I will add that Cool Carbon front pads, leaving rear stock, completely eliminated all brake squeal for me. And, much less dust. I also have not noticed any decline in pedal feel. Very happy I made the switch!

So you didnt swap out the rotor? Sorry photos dont show. I have 9mm front left and 11mm rear and it squeals like holy hell. BMW told me i dont NEED a brake job but only a brake job would fix the sound. Said i have a lip at the top of edge of the rotor and when the brakes get hot it is causing the noise. What pads did you use and think I should try just pads for now? |

Cool carbon pads on the front completely eliminated my brake noise. I left rear OEM. I also have a lip on the edge of my rotors, but I didn't change them, and have had no problems. Much less brake dust.
Looks like ECS stopped selling them for the F10 M5, but European auto source appears to sell them, both front and rear. |

Typically, you replace the sensors when you replace the pads.

Hello, I'm wandering if anyone has found a good DIY for taking the rotors off as well? I'm looking for a DIY similar to this one with the pics and instructions.

I haven’t taken the rotors off yet. But I’m sure it’s a basic design with two bolts holding the calipers. Once the calipers are off, you should be able to remove the rotors.

I just performed this service. The rotors are held on by two allen head screws. Very easy to do after you remove the caliper

Is there a specific way to do the rear ones, I'm being told the rear is complicated because of the hand brake supposedly there is a specific way for that.

there are some DIYs on YouTube. search with "BMW rear brake pads with electric parking brake" You don't necessarily need the software to retract the electric hand brake. You can do it manually once you remove the motor.
