How to use voice control ?

Hello Chaps,
Never used the voice control function, on any BMW ive owned, but lately ive become curious about it. Do you have to set the phone book up to be recognised, or will it just come up off the bluetooth connection ?. On our X5, if i have my phone connected by bluetooth, and i say "phone book", all i get is, "phone book empty" ?. Ive had a read of both the M5 and X5 manuals, and i cant make head nor tail of what they are saying. Anybody able to shead some light on this, for a techno dumbo ?, thankyou.

It's hit or miss. I forgot I had a BMW Siri until you reminded me with this post.
System sucks.

Voice recognition in the BMW M5 is one of my complaints. I got to try Sync in a Ford SUV and frankly, I think that it is a much better system as it can get 80% of anything I ask of it. The BMW, however can recognize I'd say 30% of the time. Even a simple voice command such as "Search Music/Artist/'Name of Artist'", the BMW voice recognition would try to go to the phone listing and search for the name only to come back with a telephone of a listed name not even close to what the Artist's name I just said. It is so frustrating!

This doesn't work on mine. If it works on yours, maybe its a 2014 only feature.

If says it is empty, it may be the case that it looks for data in the "hard disk" of the car, and not directly into your phone book.

I have found the voice control very useful, especially in heavy traffic or driving above 80mph; especially at night.

No iPhone or equivalent = no phone book. To the best of my knowledge there is no HD in the car. At least not one that is used to store an address book/phone numbers. You can always just say the phone number and it will happily dial it.

I have found voice input of trip addresses, making phone calls via saying the phone number or looking up the name in the phone book (via an iPhone 5s) to be spot on.

I have the iPhone cradle installed and I just leave that particular iPhone in the car at all times.

The voice control is far superior to the last three I've had. It is actually very useful.
