Car bricked during coding

On Friday, I was having my car coded remotely by a very experienced and reputable coder. No, I will not say who. He's a nice guy and I do not think this was 100% his fault.

The car will no longer power. The doors will lock, the dome light works, and that's about it.

When holding start, the P will flash.

It's not the battery. Car cannot be jumped and battery shows 96% and 12.8 volts.

Car cannot go into neutral (2014 m5) without power so roadside assistance can't get anyone to tow it

What the living heck do I do?

Warning to others, your car can be bricked during coding.

Have you tried letting the car go into sleep mode and then disconnect the battery?

You can move it to neutral manually:

My buddy says he thinks your car might be stuck in boot mode?
Can you ask the coder to remote into your car to check?

is there anyway BMW can tell you/someone have tampered with it, if it was done remotely? couldn't you plead ignorance and get them to sort it out under warranty?

Actually yes!

On friday, the coder could not get back into the car.

he tried again today, was able to immediately connect, went to the car access module i believe, reset to default values, and immediately the car had power restored.

I'm beyond excited. Also, bmw road side assistance doesnt seem to have a clue on how to communicate what needs to happen to pull a vehicle.

Glad to hear! Did he identify the specific issue or parameter change that caused it to brick?

I believe the issue was that the car lost power while coding the cas or lighting module.

Have you kept the coding or is the car flashed back to stock now?

FYI

Coding doesn't brick the module but if the wrong option is enabled or disabled it can cause issues. Restoring the module default settings will fix it as was done.

Glad to hear it's back in action!

Power was lost to vehicle during the writing of a module.
