BMW e60 (08-10) M5 or F10 M5

I'm trying to upgrade from my 08 335i and trying to figure out what M series model I should get. I just want to know which is better and faster

Can't speak for other people but the general opinion here seems to be the F10 is the one to go for if you want the quicker and more economical (around 40%) one.It may be easier to spend some time searching the many previous posts on here comparing the two as there are many things that make the V10 E60 and V8 F10 different.

I do love that NA V10. But I hear the E60 M5 has a lot of reliability problems. I'd suggest you look in to that.

Thanks man I seen his video over an hour ago and I read about that. I may just go ahead with the f10 but then again the car ain't that much for a v10. Do you think I should go ahead and get a m3 or still go for a f10

Think of it this way.. if you get the M3... you will always have something in back of your head that mann i shouldve got the M5. Pull the plug. Get the M5 F10.. downpipes, tune and intake. And you are done.

The F10 is better in terms of reliability, (touch wood) and it is also way way faster.

I loved my E60 M5.. I also love my F10 M5. Both 6spds... so transmission failures etc are not a worry. They are 2 completely different cars. One has torque and the other doesn't. They both look great IMO. It really comes down to what you can afford..

I thought the E60 seats were pretty comfortable, but the active/heat/cool seats in my F10 M5 are so much better. The F10 platform is also quieter than either the E60 or Corvette I was driving before. The F10 is a better car really.

I cant really comment with huge gusto, since I purchased my F10 in Feb, but still havent driven it properly yet (I was forced to drive it to my garage - in the wet and sometimes slightly icy roads - without winter tires, total trip was about 10km's).

I also came from the V10 in its M6 guise, and as mentioned before somewhere - it was the sleepless nights driven by the fear of something going wrong on the car that drove me to sell it. The last straw was when 2 of the 4 VANOS Solenoids were out of range.....

The F10 M5 judging from this forum, seems way more reliable with less costly weak points. I think the most expensive seems the coil packs. Turbos seem reliable as does the bottom end (untuned or otherwise).

There also seems to be a common thread in all the F10 reviews:-

- handling is excellent for a big sedan
- speed is astonishingly quick
- spacious interior / large boot
- high level of tech. throughout
- comfort level excellent, highly adjustable and comfortable seats
- fuel economy/range - good considering hp/torque/performance numbers
- looks better than the Bangle cars

Another common thread is: how to make F10 M5 louder or F10 m5 too quiet

But you are correct. The F10 m5 is a waaaay better car than the E60 m5 is almost every standpoint. And it should be because it is the newer car (assuming BMW improves every new generation of cars).

From personal experience the SMG in the E60 m5 is only fun when you go full throttle on S6. Other than that, it is hella annoying, especially when you have non-car people in the car. The SMG is also guaranteed to give passengers headaches from the lurch.

I think the size of the E60 is actually similar to the F80 M3, but don't quote me on that.

The F10 has the better speakers, infotainment system, heads up display etc etc. Its just a newer car, and if you plan to keep it long term, then its the right car (assuming you can afford it).

Though the only problem is the non-V10 exhaust. But hey, if you never driven a V10, you will never know what you are missing out on. Ignorance is bliss!!!

I've had both. Both modified. I actually preferred the e60 M5 over the F10 M5. e60 felt like a race car first and luxury sedan second. F10 feels like a fast luxury car similar to how a Mercedes feels.

I had virtually no issues with my e60 and clocked 92,000 miles. I have had some problems with my F10 (rear struts, front control arms).

Miss that e60 sound and driving experience. F10 is more refined, more compliant, but less edgy and, for me, less exciting to drive and less special feeling. That's been my experience.

Yes, the F10 is faster but it takes more than speed to feel special.

One thing the E60 has going for it is the more slippery shape, completely delimited and performance pack added E60's have crossed 200mph and the similarly treated F10 will barely reach 190mph though caution is advised in market tyres' speed rating used for someone attempting this.

Ived owned an e60 m5 and I still miss it. i traded it for a GT3.

I now have an e39 and F10 M5.

I will buy it again if I can just find a nice example.

All cars break. When a car is out of warranty, it cost $$. I have it for 6 years and I was first owner.

That V10 is symphony in the ears. Someday, ill get another one.

Agreed. Your comments are high praise especially coming from someone that moved to a GT3.

The e60 M5 had a visceral feeling to it and real soul.

I traded the e60 m5 to my 991 GT3 which I waited for 6 month because I have not been using it that much and I dont have garage space. Stupid reason.

After 2 months, I sold the 991 GT3, then I felt the guilt.

Thats why right now, I dont trade a good car for just simply garage space.

Mine had an SMG and I liked it too.

My opinion, if someone cannot afford to maintain or fix it, dont bash the car.

The F10 is a better car in everyway but it will never feel like an e60 m5. e60 is fast, it feels better to drive than an e39. It is not as pretty like an e39 or F10 but it is a real bmw made by BMW motorsport.

Has the engine on an F10 been raced? That V10 was F1 motorsport derived.

I honestly dont believe what doug says. He seems to be a nice guy.

But not owning these cars he reviews, then borrowing it for a few hours, then giving his reviews, I would not put my money where his mouth is.

Most of those you see in youtube are vloggers, they are not real automotive enthusiasts. There are only a few who are really left.

Ive used my e60 on 1000 mile trips and did daily driving, no problem. It gulps gas like a thirsty mule, but that V10 is well worth it.

Had my E60 M5 for 6 years and got to 106k before selling and no major issues. Helped that it was a 6 speed but generally really enjoyed the car.

Just change out the rod bearings and enjoy the V10 or spend more and get the newer F10. I owned E60 before and F10 is overall a better car but that V10 with exhaust is intoxicating. Definitely one of a kind
