CEL - Throttle Position Sensor Error

Guys-I'm getting this code for the CEL. Anyone get this? Any thoughts?

Does the car exhibit any symptoms?

Record the code and clear it. See if it comes back.

No symptoms at all. No misfires, engine idling surges, or unexpected car jerking, etc.

I would clear it, drive a few days/week and see if it comes back.

After resetting the check engine light yesterday I drove the car for about 30 miles today and the engine light came back on.

Just read the OBD diagnosis again and now there are no error codes yet the CEL is still on.

P0120 is a bad throttle position sensor (TPS)code . Sensor on the throttle body is reading out of range on bank A, compared to the other sensor on bank B. Sensor is probably just starting to go bad.

Is there a DIY for replacing the sensor?

No DIY that I know of. You will have to find a copy of TIS or whatever they call it these days and see what the replacement procedure is. If it was me, I would replace them both. That's been my experience and "MO" on other BMW platforms with 2 banks of ITB's.

I believe the sensors are located towards the front of the engine, down lower where the intercoolers connect to the rest of the intake. For a visual, take a look at the technical update PDF on the S63TU located on this site

Hmmm can't seem to locate it. i found the S63TU engine components PDF. Is it easily accessible or do i need to dive down deep in the engine bay? Also, i can't seem to find the actual sensors online for purchase.....not sure if it's called something different? If you search "f10 M5 throttle position sensor" nothing comes up, i only get search results for the e60 m5, e46, e90.

It looks like you have to replace the throttlebody assembly. Maybe in this case it's better to only replace the side that's failed!

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=13_0967

I think some guys that run meth have had to replace the TB due to wearing out the throttle plate. You might find some posts that could be helpful. I do think it is a lot of work to replace them. As I described in my earlier post, they are located lower on the front outer sides of the block. They might be best reached from under the car. I'm not positive.

Update here.....i ran a diagnostic report and there were no OBD codes coming up similar to one of my previous posts. I decided to remove my BMS software tune. Started the car up and the CEL was gone. I dont know if this has something to do with the fact that the tune manipulates the throttle response along with other factors but i'll drive it for a day or two and see if the CEL comes back.

Well that's good news. Sometimes tunes can cause weird errors. Good thinking on your part.

Please update the thread when you draw some conclusions!

Update - CEL came back on after about 40 miles of driving after removing the software tune. I ran a full ECU diagnostic report and got the below 2 codes...

9307A1 - Outside door handle electronics, driver's door: non-permissible current value on unlock line (this has been the case since i got the car, the comfort access lock/unlock doesn't work and the dealer had quoted me $400 to replace it but didn't think it was worth it)

D02D3A - Camera-based driver support system (KAFAS) interface (camera, front area monitoring, 96.1.2): Signal invalid

Could this really be a reason for a CEL though?

None of those will set a CEL.
