Ambient Lighting Mod for F10 :camera:

So a little birdie gave me a visit and said these were in need for the F10...I must say, I am loving them and how they are turning out. Printed in transparent PETG.

A few pics thus far....passenger door (last picture) for reference is stock.

The F80/F82 guys have been doing this awhile. Go watch videos on it and they rave about it giving the car an updated F90 look. Couldn't get this anywhere for the F10 till now. Looks great.

And you have a great idea there: make them in different colors and when the idrive settings for ambient lighting are switched to white, boom New color options for ambient lighting. All without any changes to the existing system or voiding warranty.

Love those blue shade strips; Gather that transparent can mean white with these.

Transparent being that any color emitted can be seen thru this material.

Did you do a complete upgrade to the ambient lighting by opening the doors up and putting in LED strips?

Yea.
Had a diy thread but no idea where it went

Fast.F10 looks like he's on to something so I'd wait to see if he makes this available.

Right, I think I saw your thread. I'm sure most of us would love that mod, really boosts the light output, but it's a lot of work.

This is a different mod here. There's no opening the doors or changing anything. This uses the existing lighting and leaves the hardware as is. For many of us who don't want to go too far yet want a subtle upgrade to the ambient lighting, this works well.

The stock ambient lighting channels light vertically. What these are, are bars that pop into the ambient light channel and direct light horizontally (like the F90) as well as vertically.

PETG is not a quick print. Been running 8.5" runs most of today...but only have 1 PETG spool; unexpected print job so not much on hand.

I have 3 options:
  1. #1 Use my smaller printers and print 8" runs in max for a 3 piece set up.
  2. #2 Run it on my bigger printer and run at 10.5" long.
  3. #3 Upgrade my heater bed on my big printer. This may be the final route, but not this moment.

Will have the small 8" max / 3 piece setup offering. The second option ties up that printer. So until that heat bed gets upgraded....3 piece. Not too apparent during the day and when lite up...also not too noticeable.

Now im curious about Transparent Blue...just set up another printer for BLue alone with the clear/transparent. Dont think Yellow or Green transparent will be good and I think that all the PETG colors I have.

So...dumb question coming... how are ANY of ambient lights that bright? I have mine supposedly at 100% and they are barely noticeable! I suppose thats partially the point of this thread, but, even the stock photos appear way brighter than mine.

I have super light interior so its not "truly" a fair test vs say Black interior. But the "bar effect" will still be present.

It's due to the camera settings and exposure. Sometimes lights in a dark setting look dim on video and other times they look bright if you were to take a photo.

It's hard to appreciate what they really look like unless you see it in person with your own eyes.

Might have the pre lci ambient lighting. Pre lci had different led modules. Make sure you've turned the dimmer roller next to your headlight switch all the way up in case you're trying to turn it up via idrive

Edit:* optical cable was also changed in lci models in case you get bright ideas. No pun intended

And now Blue. Pics taken in bitch black garage.

1 pic of just ambient lighting
1 pic with door open

Its either Blue or a faint orange if selecting thru Modern/Classic.

I'll be running clear trim /white color myself. The break in different pieces is very apparent with Blue...not so much with clear trim pieces. Doubtful Blue will make it to the list.

These are more visible than stock because they appear to extend down and protrude out below the door trims so you are looking directly at the light diffuser thing instead of just seeing the light shining down from the stock units concealed inside the trims.

Yes, getting some visible light on on all black door is something I've wanted for a long time. I ran across my spare set of emitters recently but I never did feel that motivated to try to boost their output above stock because I got pessimistic that anything is going to show up on the black door just by shining down from inside the door trims.
