Brake wear query

Hi all,

Possibly a silly question, does anyone know if the M5 brake service indicator is actually measuring the amount of life left on the pads or is it just calculating it based on mileage and how hard the car is driven.

Mines saying the rears will need looking at in 4k miles but recent bmw health check showed 8mm left on them - which I think is quite a lot!

Don't want to be replacing them before needed as obviously a significant cost.

Many thanks

Its mileage and sensor resistance that calculates the life left. If the sensor is not replaced when pads are changed the service indicator will not reset.

I got a lot out of my rear pads when they looked like they had not much left. I purchased my new ones from BMW and were approx £60 plus VAT if I'm not mistaken. That was trade price though.

I didn't know that the wire sensor needs to be replaced with new one, even when it's not rubbed to trigger the wear warning light.

Yes, the resistance is checked so the module knows whether it's been replaced or not.
