Oil

Apologies as I know there are many oil threads but my head is pickled reading them, i have had my 2013 comp pack for around six weeks now. It has just asked for 1 litre of oil after 1400 miles, it was full when i got her. I have decided not to pay the BMW dealer prices just to show on the idrive. I will buy a service book and supply my own oil to be serviced by my local mechanic, i will service every 6k and have the book stamped and keep the receipt for the oil used for the records. I know the car currently has shell 0W-30 but at 53k do you think it would benefit using a slightly thicker oil? I have read this can also help the consumption. Any help greatly appreciated. Car is awesome by the way!! Well apart from my creaking driver seat!!

Your creaking seat is getting a reputation lol
Stick to what BMW recommends for these 0-30,gets to those many nooks and crannies quicker at start up and of course the much talked about rod bearings.Remember 0-40 Mobil 1 is not recommended for BMW anymore.
I always carry a 4 litre oil container in the neat boot cut out should I need a 1 litre top up.

I use Castrol 0-30 Edge with FST,there are other brands but can get this one easily and like you do oil changes around the 5-6000mile mark or every year whichever comes first.
Whatever you do don't disconnect the airbag connection to the seat if your not taking it off, you may have hassle and big expense in someone cancelling the sms warning light.

Thanks for the seat advice, I think I read about that somewhere. I will probably just take the bolts out and lift as far as I can.
cheers

Topping up oil will not show on the iDrive and there is absolutely no point in getting a dealer to do it. I am highly sceptical whether anyone does this. A full oil change as part of a service will show up.

I use Castrol Edge 0W30, which is the recommended weight for UK M5s. I always carry a spare 1L bottle in the boot but I bought 8L fairly cheaply from Asda recently so I use that to top up if I can get home shortly after the warning comes up.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply, i had read about in between services not being put on the idive, i find this a bit crazy. Anyway i'm thinking of never going to BMW as much as i would like it to show on the service menu on idrive. Castrol Edge 0W30 it is.
Cheers

This isn't true I have a yearly oil change and they put it on the I drive when I ask

What they don't do is reset the service indicator

I specifically asked about this and I was told that they would only put it on the service record if I paid for a full service rather than an additional oil change.

i changed from 0w30 to 5w30 Castrol edge at my last oil annual oil change in may.

I've done just over 1,000 miles since then and oil is showing half way between min / max on the idrive.

Hi,
Does an Indy have the software to keep the Idrive up to date with servicing or is it main dealer only?
Cheers

I use the service book as back up, get them to fill it in when oil/filter change is performed yearly with Bm. It's there in black and white with the Bm stamp.

not really, pretty normal on the M5 from what I've read and researched.
