Warming up
Hi/hallo/hej/howdy
What’s the best action upon first starting the M5? Some sources and threads suggest let it idle at standstill a short while, some specifically say as soon as the car is started gently drive away (I think this is the BMW line?) |

I wait for the cat heat-up cycle to end and the engine returns to low idle. That gives me time to fasten my seat belt, put my phone in the holder and put a smile on my face... and then gently drive off until the engine is up to temperature. My drive from home is a six mile drive at 40 and 45 MPH, which is plenty time to get up to operating temperature.

I usually start the car and go. Never put the car under any heavy load or over 3k rpm until I'm at operating temp. I have catless dp with cold start delete so I usually go right away. Otherwise I would totally wait till Rpms settle down to idle.

Same as others for me too. I wait for the cat cycle and rpm to drop then I coast down the hill in neutral for another minute till I slap it in gear (3rd at ~20mph) and go on.

Wait, what? I start the car and start driving. Should I be waiting? I live in Los Angeles so not sure because the temp doesn't get low I'm fine. Interested to hear from folks.

It's better to start and wait for a few minutes then proceed at low revs until the oil temp needle goes just past the first dot.
If you have an a/market exhaust with no cold start delete in a densely populated area you may have no choice but to drive off (neighbours) and take it easy driving it like a fiat 500 until up to temp. |

I usually let her idle until the cold start revs settle down. I'll let her sit for a few minutes idling then drive off gently. I won't go over 4K rpm until the needle starts moving. I rather take her gentle and let her warm up correctly before I get on her hard.

So I drove across "town" today in LA and my oil temp never hit the first dot. Still not sure what I'm missing here. I have a '16 F10 manual, stock other than Dinan coil overs. Teach me forum members!

I wait for cold start to finish, drive off for 2 miles and keep it under 3k since it's still cold when I get to work. When I'm taking a longer trip same except once it's up to temp I drive it like I stole it. (Tuned stage 2)

I've heard it's best to keep the car in efficient mode rather than S3 as it will allow for quicker warmups.

*It's like 101C instead of ~103C. Sport Plus, however, is significantly lower, being around 87-88C.

With any modern vehicle, waiting beyond roughly 1 minute (enough to come down to normal idle as stated several times already) is just wasting energy. The engine will take a long time to warm up at idle. You want the car to go into closed loop and then start driving. As stated by others, be easy on the load until the oil warms up. IMO, once the needle is moving it's warm enough to drive harder if needed (like to pass someone) but I'd wait for any redline pulls until the oil is fully warm.
Regarding needle position for "warmed up", it definitely depends on climate and traffic conditions but you don't need to be to the first dot to be fully warmed up. Keep in mind that the gauge is "dampened" as well. My normal operating temp varies, but usually 3/4 of the way from "zero" and the first dot. It gets up to the first dot when in more traffic and/or stop and go. If you put into sport+ mode, the oil cooler is fully utilized which will bring the temp lower. |

I wait 3 seconds and go. I'll keep under 3k rpm for a while. Shift up manually at 1.5k or 1.7k. The default auto mode revs much more than I'm comfortable with. So I always override and do my own shifts.
I'll stay under 60 mph until the needle starts to move. After that I have fun. 128,715 miles. I took an e90 330i to 250,000 miles doing the same until the plastic fittings in the coolant lines started to break. |

This; mine is about a 40min drive with dropping off my son in there...plenty of time to press that little M button.

It's a big PU so it's not just a question of letting it warm up at idle but to get the oil circulating everywhere for at least two minutes before setting off.
