Bang and Oufson top speaker dash removal?

Any body got a walk through on how to take out the bang and Oufson top speaker ? The silver wrap inside the speaker is bubbled up so I want to fix it up.

Thanks!

I haven't looked into how to do it yet, but I have the same problem. Interesting that I'm not the only one! I figured some idiot detailer used the wrong products to clean the interior at some point prior to my ownership and that cleaner loosened the adhesive on the decal. The same thing is happening to the cupholder trim (6MT car).

Subscribed for updates... If this doesn't get updated by the time I do mine, I'll post here.

Thanks. That will probably be most helpful for the OP. I have ISTA D on my laptop which includes TIS documents. I planned to look up the replacement using that. I'm just waiting until spring when I put my e39 M5 back on the road so I don't have to rush this work. I have several other minor interior things I plan to take care of at the same time.

I know it's been two years...but were you able to fix it? I have the exact same problem and that link is dead. TIA

If you need help removing your B&O center speaker, I can walk you through it....I'd post a how-to but want to make sure that is what you need first.....

In some instances, I've see where the defroster heat leaks out and "overheats" the center speaker. It's actually a defect on some dashboards where the plastic speaker material was too aggressively cut back. A way to check this is when you use "auto" for cabin temp, and it's set above 78F, touch the speaker...if hot, the defroster is leaking in the speaker cut out area, and that heat is enough to cause the metal deposition layer on the plastic speaker piece, to delaminate.

The speaker does not have separate pieces and must be bought as an assembly....very, very expensive...even on eBay, they are $1000 +/- $200....

If you need to remove the dash mounted B&O speaker, first you need to pop off the speaker trim cover, and then the trim surrounding the speaker itself.

There is then a number (4?) of screws/bolts that secure the assembly into the dash.

....BUT be careful when popping off the center cover...it has these very small tangs that bend very easily and will break off when trying to adjust....

Lift all corners first, and don't raise any corner too high....once you remove it, you'll see what I mean.

From this point, follow AlisterB's direction.....

The reviews are suspicious. Notice all 5 start and the "Dear friend". May well be OK but that is a red flag.

Sorry...no I did not...but here is the text version.

The anodized aluminum speaker cover must be removed first by using a plastic pry tool, and lift at all 4 corners. Once they are all disengaged, lift the anodized aluminum speaker cover straight up until you've cleared the clips. This will expose the mid-range speaker and top of the tweeter horn.

Using the same pry tool us it top pop off the large black plastic trim on the left and right side. It uses the same clips as those on the anodized aluminum speaker cover, so don't lift up until all clips are disengaged.

There are four T-20 screws, two at the very front by the tweeter, and one each side in the rear by the windshield...the front two screws will be very easy to remove, but you may need a small ratchet on the T-20 tip to remove the rear two screws.

Using the same pry tool, us it to lift up the speaker from the front to the rear. The front of the speaker will have a wiring harness that plugs into the front LED that may get in the way lifting up the front. On the right side of the speaker is the main harness connector that must be unplugged, but one done, you should be able to lift out the whole speaker assembly.

If pictures are required...willing to post, but only if really required.

[EDIT: If you are going from an H-K center dash speaker to the B&O, you must cut the dashboard...and there is a Youtube video]

Thanks you so much for such detailed message. Yes I'm jumping over from HK into B&O. Just removed the old one and ready to cut that piece off, bought some tools. The problem is I have 5 wires now coming out the new speaker and only 2 pin cord pulled out the old one. Lost my instruction and have no idea how to plug it in. Have only digital guide from my seller , not really helpful..

I can post the wiring....to the 10 pin connector...let me dig it up...but you will need a pair of wire for each function:

...so if you only 5 wires, what shares a common wire?

Pin 4: +12VDC from JBE Connector Z7.2B Pin 4 (Red/Brown) = Fuse F26
Pin 5: Tweeter(-) from B&O Amp (Grey/White)
Pin 6: Tweeter(+) from B&O Amp (Grey/Black)

BTW, in the figure below, the arrow is pointing to the crack that needs to be filled, else heat from the defrost will heat up the speaker and cause the silver chrome to peel from the center horn....and that CANNOT be repairs/replaced.

This may be on one or both sides....this should be RTV'ed sealed prior to speaker install.....

Great Pictures......

So you'll need to do a bit more trimming, but let's get to the wiring....

Your single speaker pair from your 1st picture will connect to the yellow pair on the 2nd picture..(+) to (+) and (-) to (-)........
Picture 1: Black/Purple = Speaker (-) = Picture 2 Yellow (-)
Picture 1: Black/White = Speaker (+) = Picture 2 Yellow (+)

In the 2nd picture the red wire needs to go to Ignition-on only power source (+ 12VDC) and green needs to go to the Accessory (+12V) source (ignition or amp) and the black wire needs to be connected to chassis ground...btw accessory ignition means that the tweeter will raise up when you turn on your car, and remain on until your accessory power is removed from terminal 30(?) but should really be tapped into your Amp on/off signal accessible on the main CIC/NBT unit connector that is behind your climate control panel....

I prefer to use factory Junction box locations for each electronic mod, but you could easily tap into the front lighter harness for both +12VDC and Ground....

[Edit: Your green wire can tap into the "Radio_On" signal that is available on the Headunit (A42) Connector A42.1B Pin 13 wire color black/white stripe....]
