The search for a 15/16 F10 6MT...

New to the forum but wanted to lay my situation out here. I would appreciate any (even if folks think it isn't much) guidance on how best to try and find one. I've already reached out to a national broker who said they wouldn't take the retained search "as there are too few in the market, 0-5 at any one time".

That said, I'm looking for the following:

Car - F10 M5; 6 spd manual
Year - Later end of the F10; '15/'16
Ext Color - Dark grey or black
Int Color - Dark (not red or white)
Mileage - Sub 50k (lower the better, obviously)

Would appreciate if someone knew the best way to source this - anyone who's used the usual apps/websites (Car Gurus, Autotrader, etc.) know that half of the cars are listed as "manual" but aren't actually 3-pedal "real" manuals. I'm in Southern California and don't mind it being anywhere in the US. Appreciate any help and/or guidance.

I currently have a MY'13 Audi S4 6MT and plan to keep that but wanted something else that's unique and can add to the family. Any help is appreciated and if there's a link to an existing thread on this, would love it (couldn't find in my search). Thanks!

I used car gurus mostly as it is easier to search the newest additions since you can filter it down that way. Realistically you just need to look at every single car that is listed as a manual to actually find it. Steering wheel paddles are a give away, but once you have looked at all the options out there you can just look at the newer listings to weed those out.

Good point...done the review of each listing by picture but will be easier going forward to only look at "newest". Thanks

You setup searches on all the major sites and then just check the new hits that come up. Many subsequent hits are reposts or price changes and you will begin to remember cars you've looked at before. And you can always VIN decode to tell how equipped even without pictures showing you the parts of interest.

Good point just need the last 7 of the vin to check. Another thing I think the good majority of the comp packages will not be manual. I am sure someone has the figures, but of all production there were only ~577 manuals

Your post is similar to several others who recently went through the same search. When I was looking for a 6MT I didn't have the budget (nor did I want to) for a 15/16 as they were still $65k+ With depreciation hitting the F10 pretty hard I didn't want to lose $4-5K value in the first 6 months to year of ownership.

Anyway, it took me 3 months to find the right car. I was pretty specific beyond the 6MT. Needed to be Imperial Blue or Monte Carlo blue, sub 50k miles and have some options such as executive package. The B&O was a nice add too.

I searched eBay, AutoTempest, Auto Trader and most frequently cars.com. The place I bought mine from is called Cabriolet Motors. They specialize in finding "rare" versions of cars, in particular the BMW's they look for would be manuals. You could reach out to them and tell them what you're looking for.

As you have found out, it's a PITA looking for one because you have to look at literally every ad or run every vin. Mostly you will find manual listed and it's actually DCT but I came across at least one ad that just said automatic and a few ads where transmission wasn't specified and they ended up being manuals.

As a side note, most of the 6MT's built were 2013's (for the US market). 14-16 6MT were only handfuls each year.

Really helpful and appreciate the few additional avenues I can check/work with. I knew the total MT production numbers but wasn't aware they were heavily weighted toward earlier in the model cycle.

The sad thing is those while they're the most common, those are the ones to avoid. If you can, try to find one made in 14-16 as those are the LCI models with a refreshed iDrive, updated headlights, taillights and improved injectors.

Appreciate all the feedback thus far...educating me for the process ahead.

Feel free to send any link(s) to cars in the marketplace people come across! I've got daily notifiers/updates from multiple websites set up.

There are a few in Canada near the Toronto/Montreal area right now.

https://www.autotrader.ca/go/19-11134701

https://www.autotrader.ca/go/5-43992652

https://www.autotrader.ca/go/19-11132226

There is a 2013 available as well, but didn't link as you are looking for newer.

Maybe worth a flight and you gain with the exchange rate.

Barry, much appreciated! I'm not well versed in the transport of Canadian cars but given the rigidness of California vehicle laws, assume this can't be registered in my state. Amazing that you could find not one but three w/ a manual transmission!

It is likely no different than importing a car from another state. I assume that you would have to complete a safety and emissions in order to pass inspection in CA.

The only difference in the Canadian spec would be how the metric measurement of mileage and speed. Both of which can be easily coded to imperial measurement. (not sure that would be an issue though)

It may be worth looking into as these cars appear to meet your requirements.

You need to investigate as my experience with gray market cars in the mid 2000's was not good. I had two e23 745i turbos from the early 80's that had been imported to other states. I had them all tuned and had great smog figures but the referee wouldn't touch them. I would have had to send them to some BAR lab where they would test them and install smog devices at no known upfront cost. $15k was a figure that was not unknown. One guy did this with his 745i, but his was worth it as it was previously owned by Baby Doc Duvalier and had a wet bar in back! Mine were just old cars.

With modern cars it may be the case that Canadian cars are emissions equivalent to US/Calif cars both physically and legally, but investigate first so you don't waste time and money.

So in the past week I've been "helpful" to two new listings where the seller indicated "6 speed manual" and asked for photos of the interior to confirm. They appreciate and quickly corrected. I have a sense this will be a broad trend. Thanks again for the tip above to look for paddle shifters as it's the quickest giveaway (beyond a manual shifter).

Not too many manuals made for the M5. I can still remember in 2016 when I was looking, a lot of MT to pick on. Now, its hard to come by.

Good luck on your search.

Its a good deal and well optioned car. Note that it says 'Sale Pending'. Note sure you ran a CarFax or got a history report from BMW on the owners, previous service records, etc.

You may need to make a quick call if the car is till up for sale. Agree with you on the interiors - this car will need a lot of TLC, even the exterior paint.

Great minds think alike., just saw you have a B8.5 S4. I had a B8 S4, traded it in for a B8.5 manual just like yours. Went full EPL.. both pulleys, new cooling, clutch had a tough time on 1st/2nd hard shift.. but otherwise held beautifully. Great car to be honest...

Sold that and got my 2013 M5 in manual.. you will not be disappointed and don't settle for finding an automatic (not that they are bad ). Good luck in your search!

Let me know if you are interested in that car it is actually local to me. I might be able to swing over one of these nights to go have a look if you would like. That interior though has to be a nightmare to keep looking fresh, personally I don't think I could do it.

Holy **** I love my car but I'd sell it in a heart beat for that one.

It's my holy grail car:
-6MT
-2016
-Frozen Blue!
-Full Silverstone II interior
-B&O
-Comp pack

That's a fair/great price too.
