A common theme with blown engines seems to be the removal of the down pipes and primary cats

It's unlikely that a replacement engine on just 3k miles would have an internal failure. It's more likely an oil pipe union cracked or came out. The oil rad may have received a hit or split with the resulting oil loss. The rod bearings only have to lose oil pressure for a few seconds and they are ruined.
Shame as the car itself looks immaculate.

Was it a short block replacement engine from an aftermarket rebuild agent or a BMW warranty job.

Don't new replacement motors, especially from the manufacturers, usually come with something like a 12 month, 12,000 mile warranty?

That is interesting. Since it is otherwise under warranty, they are going to have to prove that anything you may have done directly caused the failure, otherwise the burden is on them to honor their warranty.

You mentioned that there were lean codes from the time you got the car back, that is telling. Make sure you document those codes and preferably, you turn off the CEL but don't delete the codes. It would be great if you had pics of the codes. Insurance is likely going to pick this up under the warranty, and not necessarily come out of the dealers pocket unless BMW NA sends someone down and they see something silly-stupid the dealer might have done. It probably will take a week or two, but I'm wagering you'll get another new motor from what I understand here. Keep us posted.

I'm not sure your situation with your dealer, but I'd be over there at night swapping the stock parts back on the car! Downpipes are a super easy way to deny another engine and in this case the leans codes would help their case, not yours.

If I was a claim worker, here's what I see: Car had engine replaced, engine blows within 3k miles. Hmm, that is definitely odd. Oh, the car has aftermarket down pipes and a tune with lean codes present? Well shit, that tune caused that piston to blow. DENIED.

Just playing devils advocate here. You might have been lucky to get the first engine but I'd bet a lot of money the lean codes caused that piston to burn down. Certainly possible the cause was related to the previous engine replacement, no doubt there, but who's going to spend the time to figure that out when the aftermarket parts are an easy scapegoat? The dealer isn't going to want to help diagnose what would be their own fuck up because then they will be paying for the new engine, not BMW.

Good luck and keep us posted! Sorry to hear you have to go through it!

I just want to bring this up again since I got chastised by some dummies but go ahead and stick with that bootmod3 boys..

'cuz here's another blown motor that has the bootmod3 box ticked

was it an OTS map?

no.. The common theme is a bootmod3..

I went into detail about this months ago look up my threads.. i'm getting proven more right every day

I have Meisterschaft downpipes.. no tune.. catless is healthier for turbos

he was running bootmod3 AND stage2 catless..

im curious if he ran bm3 from day 1 of new motor or at least gave it a good stock 1200 mile break in..

regardless.. he pushed the limit of this engine's internals with a stage 2 tune.. and a bad stage 2 tune to put the cherry on top (probably) (its a big variable)

I was guessing a cylinder hopped out before I read this far down .. that's a common thing with this 63 motor ... when you put too much boost

your tune blew your motor -bm3 stage 2 ...and ill wager my left nut it was an OTS map..

nothing quite like putting a $500 tune on a $50,000 motor.. but u got warranty so who cares

About 2 months ago from day one it was giving me lean codes
Then they went a away for a while I only had the tune on the car for 20 mins
Before this happened so I have no clue why this happen Prb it went way to lean
But the dealer in cail did the motor so now the car is in ny
