M5 vs. GT3

Does anyone have a video of the M5 vs. 991 GT3. Curious to see who would be faster on the straight line.

Instrumented tests from C&D on 991 GT3 and M5 should provide the answer

not in 30-50 but regardless having driven a 911 c2s with powerkit I will be very surprised if the gt3 does 0-60 in 3 seconds flat or maybe the jump really is that massive. I am sure some on the forums will confirm.

I dont believe that from 30 mph to 150 mph the GT3 would win.. Maybe from 0 but I highly doubt from 30 mph.

Remember US times are usually with a 1 foot rollout, which is good for 0,2-0,5s over a "euro style" 0-60MPH time.

Possibly

If you take the instrumented times and look how long it takes to go from 60-150MPH, the GT3 is still faster...

GT3 takes 14,1s to go from 60-150
M5 takes 14,6s to go from 60-150

Of course, both cars are accelerating at full throttle at 60MPH in the above example, so not a pure rolling start from 60MPH.

My bet is that the M5 would be closer from a pure rolling start than what is shown above. It would probably be a very close race

Not even a comparison. GT3 is much quicker than a power kit equipped 991.

I can rip my GT3 to 60 over and over again in the low 3's (no rollout) and its the fastest rwd car I have ever owned from a dig. The grip, unique differential, and launch control sequence allows for this to be repeated over and over just like my old Turbo S but at about a half a second slower . The first day I got it, I lined up at light with a C4S (991) and we both agreed to go; it wasnt close but what shocked me is how I had zero wheel spin. Carlos Lago and MT just pulled a 3.1 from a stop at Santa Anita. Its the real deal and the jump is much more refined and muted vs the Turbo S brutality.

I have no doubt my car would pull a stock M5 from roll as well. But as @Boss330 said, it would be closer as higher hp prevails into the triple digit world.

The GT3 is faster at all levels hands down as I have both in the garage. The GT3 has so much grip, and no wheels spin with a PDK-S that shifts in 1/100th of a millisecond. It's light years ahead of the DCT, but also factor the GT3 is close to 1000lbs lighter so not a fair comparison.

A C2S is close to a second slower, and lacks the PDK-S so no go on that race. The darn thing just has too much grip, and 475 HP is under stated in my opinion.

I am amazed the car puts out those #'s with such little torque and HP.
For me, its a tough choice between the gt3 and new z06 vette.

It's a very light car plus they under-rated the power output a little. Couple all that with excellent traction, u get one heck of a power efficient car. M5 has problem putting down all its torque. Go beyond 60mph and the M5 would rule.

I spent this past Sunday playing in the Santa Monica mountains with my brother in a GT3.

The way that car grips the pavement is mind blowing. From a dig not a chance. M5 was able to maintain composure from 50+ but the GT3 is such a magnificent execution of a drivers car my M5 might as well be a Chevy Tahoe in comparison. Ferris phrased it best

" If you have the means I highly recommend picking one up".

I'm looking at the GTS vs Z06. My initial research shows no GT3 allocations.

Test drove the GTS last night. Manual 7spd. Was a blast... And man did the sport exhaust sound SWEET!

so are you guys saying it is hard to get the gt3 sideways? On a road car I look more for the fun factor than the grip factor. Can you still have fun with GT3? Does it drift?

No disrespect man but seriously, that is the craziest question. You need to DRIVE or GET A RIDE in one. It is hands down THE most FUN car on the planet to drive, excepting much higher priced supercars, and even then it beats many. Feels like a freaking race car, sticks like glue, geared to pull hard, insane throttle response and a glorious sound! It is EVERYTHING that a real driver's car should be!

And yes...you can do burnouts.-LOL

10000000000% yesterday I was running a Cayman GTS or S (couldnt confirm as he was never in front LOL) on a Mexican Curvy Toll Road aka MCTR and my lord the speeds I reached in turns Ive taken for the last 9 years in others cars!!!!! 140 plus mph in high speed turns is not out of range!

The sound!!!!! The chassis!!!!! The steering!!!!! So the performance numbers are there at a rather impressive clip but so is the driving experience. This combo is rarely found in a car at all levels: straights, launches, curves, steering, brakes, chassis, handling, rear wheel steering, tq vectoring, etc.... and the "driving experience".

@PhilT3

... there might not be any more allocations but there a few cars on the ground and moreso on the East Coast then West I think. I would do a cars.com search or autotrader to check (if not done so). As for the GTS- thats an incredible performer in its own right. I loved my C4S which had less power but it had the PSE and the 991 chassis. I have no seat time in the Z06 but the numbers show you its amazing too. I think the visuals are little aggressive but that fits my character.

Well stated. Is your brothers a 2015 or 2014? I think I saw a used 14 with your brother's build at Lambo OC.

Thanks Vic. I literally JUST started doing the research. I'll be digging more over the holiday as work is on the slow side.
Thanks.

Better decide very quickly as the allocations will be history in the next couple months if they aren't already. There are a few stragglers out there that dealers have ordered to put in inventory but you need to jump on them when you find them.

I'm Tanin's brother, the one who was driving the Speed Yellow '15 Porsche 911 GT3 last week.

To answer the OP's question, I'd say the GT3 is quicker if it uses launch control (which it does in every instrumented test), but the turbocharged M5 — with much better low-end torque — will be quicker off the line than the naturally aspirated high-revving Porsche if both are forced to start without the electronic nannies.

Under acceleration, it will be very, very close. The GT3 is more than 1,000 pounds (half-a-ton!) lighter, which more than compensates for its lower horsepower and torque, and it screams to 9,000 rpm between shifts.

My suggestion is to get a jump on the GT3... and you've got him.

- Mike
