Tom - your points about the sales-success of the M5 (and competitors) is well-taken. I'm sure there's enough of a market for it, don't get me wrong.

Bimmer6 - I wish I could have done ED on the 5. I have a 6 mo. old, though, so that kinda killed the option for me! I paid way more than I had to for a 550... mainly because I couldn't say "no" to many of the options. So, hence about 20k worth of options. As a DD, though, I think I'll use most of them.

I also agree it's probably "bad form" for 550 owners to be "picking a fight" (for lack of a better term) with M5 owners here. Clearly BMW made the M5 to do what the 550 was not in terms of performance, and it reminds me of a little dog barking furiously at a clearly bigger one. Some people must have this hard-wired into their personality from the moment they were 3 with a Big Wheel and challenged the 5 year old on his bike to a race! Honestly, I'm sure there will be plenty of "beaten" 550's on the used market, as well, due to people driving them like they stole them, when I'm positive this wasn't BMW's intention.

For the 550 owners I'd say, as I did above, if you want a race car, buy a race car. Otherwise be happy with what you have, which is a very nice, luxurious, and quick executive sedan and family hauler. FWIW, your resale value will also remain higher if you don't pimp it out, which screams to me, "I beat the snot out of this car" whether it's true or not.

Two different cars for different purposes. Both great at what they are meant for.

I don't see any 550 owners saying the M5 is a POS. Its more the other way around on this forum by a few immature members. Reality is most people would rather drive the M5 if awd isn't needed or money wasn't a concern. I don't think anybody is denying that. The fastest modded 550 is only as fast as a stock M5. Calling the 550 a POS is just poor taste of words imo. We are all Bmw Enthusiasts after all and should have mutual respect for each other.

Rookie move. The Honda Civic Type-R can crush that.

The only problem with the Civic Type-R is that every time you park it. When you come back it's usually draped in some random sluts.

Agreed. I had a 08 550 before I bought this one. I loved every part of the car and in some ways, I miss it. It is night and day just between the e60 m5 and no where close to this car in terms of performance. Would I go back to the 550>>>NO. But your right when you say that those guys shouldn't come on here and pick a fight. It gets us nowhere.

But like another poster said straight line would be hard to tell as you had mods.

Always believed M/// represented a better handling chassis, suspension, body roll, feel both connection on the road and in the cabin. Ultimate driving pleasure when you take a corner or just mash that accelerator!

This is where the m5 should be on the 'juice' your tech referred too, not just straight line speed.

Just my two cents

Enjoy either way
Make that 5 cents, that was well said. M5 although has amazing acceleration, ///M tradition is all about how it drives around corners and curves not how fast it is.

550i M Sport Dinan vs M5 Trade Offs

I don't disagree with these comparisons, but for me it is a choice I'm very happy with. A year ago I purchased a 2013 550i M Sport Dinan Stage 2 with Free Flow Exhaust, Intercoolers, and some very cool custom wheels. The car is blacked out and looks badass. It only had 22,000 miles on it and I paid $48,000 including full warranty & paid for Service Plan until March 2020. It's every bit as fast as my buddies M5 in a straight line...but I won't pretend it feels as tight or handles as well as the M5. But I don't track it or get too crazy on the twisties, so fantastic value for me.

I agree with everything you said. I had a 2012 Stage 3 Dinan 550 exhaust, suspension, intercooler, etc that was pretty quick and looked the part. It had 24k miles when I picked it up and I paid $48k back in 09/14 and sold at 36kmiles 05/15 for $43k. Looking back, I should have held on to it. While it was no M5, it provided good enough performance for a fraction of the cost of the M.

A better comparison now is the 550i tuned vs stock M4. Remember this guys--> whatever you think is great vs M4. M4 will always win.

Yeah but you still see these m5s doing 700,800+ with easy its really not comparable kinda like me coming on here with 1400hp picking a fight with these guys. Its cool that 550i's can be boosted and sleeper cars as mid to low 11s is still fast, but its really an apples to oranges comparison now that the m5 is unlocked.

Yeah I mean if you're gonna compare stock cars to modded ones I guess, but when an m4 is now just as easily modifiable the comparison again goes out the window.
