Oil consumption

A few months ago mine came up with add 1 litre of oil. My car had covered about 3k since the oil change. Tonight it came up again with add 1 litre. It can't have covered more than 1.5k since the last message i wouldn't have thought. My car has 41k on the clock.

How often do you guys top yours up and what is considered normal?

Same here.

I'm not really worried about it. Seems normal if we're all experiencing it.

But I really want to know where it's all going. That rate of oil consumption... Just burning it in the cylinders?

I've got no leaks.. pretty sure of it.

Ive had mine for about 6000kms now and had to fill up a litre of oil a couple of times, so yeah 1L per 3000kms so far. Ive also had to fill up the coolant once. The wrong coolant pic came up on the warning too.

I have heard that incorrectly breaking in a brand new m5 could lead to higher oil consumption. However it is normal for this car to consume(not burn) oil.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

Bmw M5 F10 Oil Consumption

One the great fallacies is that “oil consumption” is ok on any engine or any Bmw Motorsport Engine .

Have a read of this blog which alludes to some of the possible causes :

https://blog.bavauto.com/16943/bmw-h...-si-b11-03-13/

My St63tu engine burns zero oil ( I use Mobil1 0-40W) ; and it has 33km on the engine .
It has never been thrashed when the engine was new and engine was “broken in” properly .
Oil and filter are changed every year regardless of km/miles driven .
And this the way to look after engines and always respect engine temperatures before using performance.

This is my third Bmw and my first M vehicle with a Motorsport engine . I also have a 30 year old E21 320i and it burns zero oil as well .

Cheers
Bruce

Around 1500 mi is about right depending on how you drive it and it's in your own interest to carry a 4 or 5 litre container of your chosen engine oil in the trunk hold cut out.

Just had to fill up another litre. That's 3L in 6000kms or 1Ltr per 2000kms.

I don't drive it too often thankfully but surely that's not normal?

G’day Patty
What brand of oil and viscosity are you using ?

Also see here re crankcase ventilation faults and oil burn/consumption :

My car has 46k mi. and I have had to add 3 qts in the past 4k miles. I'm switching the oil to Liqui-Moly Molygen 5w-40. I'll update on progress because I drive quite a bit. It probably won't do much.

I am using control edge 0w-40. I've heard others on here say good things about that oil so wouldn't have thought that would be the issue.

I have E70 X5M, M6 CP 600HP, and F10 M5 CP, all of them bought new and still have both the X5M and M5. I drove them hard brand new (pulled to red line) changed oil about 200km in, and then the standard 2000km oil change. None of the three burned oil.

I have been in the forum long enough to see one can break in the car easy or hard, but the car may still consume oil regardless, it seems more like luck of the draw than how one broken in the car.

But so far the F90 series looks good, haven't seen oil consumption issues yet...

Zero oil burning 🤔🤣🤣 your cars is defenetly something wrong? If you drive about 2000km and change oil you cant see oil burning. But i bet that 15000km and if you m5 dont ask 1l oil its defenetly broken.

Zero Oil Burn or How to Break-In an Engine Correctly

I’ve been working around Bmw Engines for over 42 years (and Oil burn is a problem I don’t have because every engine I’ve owned has been broken-in correctly ).

This is the most critical technique for the longevity your engine :

Right, I had that worry shortly after I bought mine. It is normal. Mine takes a litre about every 1100-1300 miles. According to BMW:

"For BMW spark-ignition and diesel engines, the maximum permissible engine oil consumption is 0.7 l/1000 km.

Because of their increased power output and torque, M engines have a maximum permissible oil consumption of 1.5 l/1000 km."

Hope that helps

I'm now over 2,000 miles into my first oil change since buying the car. The engine has 52k miles on it. I've used 1/2 quart of oil so far in those 2,000 miles. Thank god I finally have an ///M engine that isn't as thirsty as a drunken sailor. I run Mobil 1 0w-40.

My S62 drinks 1 liter per 1,000 miles on average. The good news is on that engine, the consumption rate hasn't increased in the last 165,000 miles. :-)

Looks like there's a new lawsuit regarding the N63 & S63 oil consumption issues

It appears this one is similar to the lawsuit that was just settled, which only covers the N63. Not the S63.

Well my car has been to the dealer 4 times since April and not a single leak was found. I’ve only put around 300mi on my car since changing the oil but so far so good. When I get to 1k I’ll try to update. I went with Liqui-Moly Molygen 5w-40.

I just got my 2013 M5 with 39k from BMW dealer so it was serviced and oil was at 100%. Lol 10 days and 800 miles, spirited miles mind you and oil level is just above the min mark when I measured it this morn. My last 535i used a quart per month with my driving habits.
