5w / 30 Oil
Needed to top off and the 2 BMW service advisors, 1 sales clerk and the parts dept all said I needed 10w/60. I said no it needed 5w/30. I quickly contacted my buddy M54CCibo who gave me the link to the SBS showing the oil is 5/30. Another service advisor came and said yes ONLY 5/30! Whew I was literally one minute away before they added the wrong oil! Just an FYI for others. Be persistent when you think they are doing the wrong thing! Props to our M5Army Captain!

0W-30 is much better. Better protection during start-up and engine warm up quicker too.
It makes a big difference. Everyone should run Castrol 0W-30.

Yes, but as I believe you indicated elsewhere Stealth it should ONLY be the German version...that oil is on the approved list by BMW for the S63TU. I have considered going that direction on my next change...

That's right. The bottle should say European Formula and made in Germany

so i just mentally masturbated over this on my commute in this morning.
i am too lazy to go into dealer and get 1 quart as i would have to sit in traffic for 50 minutes to go 8 miles. i initially topped off with Castrol 5W-30 but after reading some older posts this oil is not LL-01 BMW certified. It seems that the Castrol 0W-30 euro blend does have this certification and may be best to top off with this as per what stealth said. theoretically 0W-30 should make no difference... ? Autozone has this oil at 8.99/quart.

Another good choice is Mobil 1 0W40 it carries the LL01 spec and gives you the best of both worlds. An oil which will stay viscous when hot (doesn't thin out too much) and pump easily when cold (good for first start of the day.
