2014 M5 CP start-stop system malfunction
LAST STATUS UPDATED ON 10/13
Some of you guys know me from me threadjacking another member's post to discuss about my start-stop system malfunction. So I decided to make a new one of its own. I purchased my 2014 M5 Competition package from Steve Thomas BMW on 5/3/14 and from the day 1, my start-stop system wasn't working properly. Issue It stops in stop lights but turns right back on within ~1 sec of time. Even though I don't use this feature often, I want to fix it so it works properly whenever I want to use it. So I took it to Irvine BMW and here is recap: 6/3-6/5 (2 days) 1. Recharged battery overnight and cleaned up a portion of software relate to this issue - didn't fix it. 6/9-7/1 (22 days) 2. Reflash whole software with BMW NA's approval - didn't fix it. 3. Replaced switch unit per BMW Field Engineer's diagnose report - didn't fix it. (My dealership foremen are working very closely with BMW NA from this point) 4. Replaced negative battery cable - didn't fix it. 5. Replaced Battery - didn't fix it. 7/8 - 7/11 (3 days) (As they had to special order this unit for my VIN from Germany, I picked up my car and enjoyed between 7/1 to 7/7 and dropped off again on 7/8) 6. Replaced the ignition unit - didn't fix it. 7/21 - 7/26 (5 days) (Special ordered DSC pressure sensor unit. Picked up and enjoyed for 2 weeks and back to shop on 7/21) 7. Replaced DSC Hydraulic unit with electronic control unit, brake bleeding 8. Replaced temp. sensor in lower radiator hose, engine cooling thermostat - didn't fix it. 8/18 - 8/21 (3 days) (Special ordered ICM unit on 7/26 and took 3.5 weeks to get this part). 9. Replace ICM control unit and reprogramed car- didn't fix it. 9/22 (1 days) 10. BMW field engineer wants to gather some data from my M5 so dropped it off in the morning and picked up after work. 10/7 - 10/10 (3 days) 11. BMW NA recommended to replace DME. It took a few weeks to get it. But long store short, it didn't fix it. 10/23 - 10/25 (2 days) 12. BMW NA recommends to replace starter unit/module. Took a couple of weeks to get it but it didn't fix it. I'm waiting on the BMW's next move. Total days at the dealership 41 BMW executive customer care offers They finally came back and offered 2 options on 7/28: • Option 1: Lease payment compensations • Option 2: buy back at the full price I paid for I decided to go with lease payment compensation and negotiated more months than they originally offered.

Just a quick question have you tried turning the climate control completely off and see if it still does this? Just use the fan speed switch to take it all the way down to off. This will tell you if it is in the climate system telling the car to start-up again.

But do you think it's possible climate control to trigger auto start/stop malfunction?

From what I have read it will cut out the start stop if the cabintemp can't keep up. Also it will not stay off if the outside temp hits 35C (95f), you move the steering wheel or start to ease up on the brake peddle.

I will try it. But as Shop foremen, BMW field engineers and BMW NA are involved all looking into this issue so I don't think this is simple issue like that. But I'm def. going to try to see if it works/helps. Thanks,

Guys, have you seen the different threads in M3/M4 about DCT clunking noise if Auto Start/Stop is enable? Looks like an actuator (?) engages or disengages at Starting/Stopping the ignition when Auto srart/stop is enable. After reading those threads, I just tested my car and I heard the same noise. I had never recognized it since I don't use this at all.
BMW must remove this button from M cars

It's good that you have everything well documented. It looks like BMW has taken care of you while they continue to diagnosis the issue, which is great to hear.
What another member said about AC is a pre-condition (one of many) but these conditions must be met for the system to engage. It seems like your issue is the amount of time the start stop system works for. It should work up until the time you let off the brake pedal, and you said it only works for about 1 second. It looks like BMW has properly escalated the issue and are trying all the various remedy's in attempt to solve it. Keep us updated. Seems like a unique issue, but still let us know what the cause/fix ends up being.

According to my dealership, BMW NA or Germany have never seen this issue on any of their cars with this feature. Dealership SA, loaner dept, shop foremen are very professional and understand my frustration. BMW executive customer care was excellent with their top notch service.

ICM unit came in after 3.5 weeks of waiting.
Dealer replaced ICM unit and reprogramed car but it didn't fix it! Dealer is contacting the BMW NA for next step and I picked up my M5 until I hear next step from dealer/BMW NA. =(
