It's enough to make people shell out more money for the package if its comes to fruition. In terms of a percentage over the stock M5, the increase is larger than the one that Lamborghini gave their recently announced 50th anniversary Aventador, which also got a 20hp boost over the standard version.

I honestly think that if they were to make M5 competitive to current market, the new LCI M5 should match E63S's 0-60 time. (which I don't think possible with 20hp increase only. It should also have X-drive or lots of weight diet)
I find many (not all) people judge the car by the 0-60 numbers.. which I feel very disturbing. However, I think people want best in the same class if they were to buy 100k BMW or MB and etc..

p.s., I love the exhaust sound from the LCI tracking video!

If the LCI M5 gets a power increase of 1 HP that will be more than the E9X series M3 got. We enthusiast need to really consider what "competition" means. Right now it means marketing and a large majority of us bite on it. Someone mentioned a "Weight Watchers" M5.....it would great if BMW offered a CSL in all M models. The fact is, the weight won't drop because they are constantly adding HP......food for thought gents.........Phil

I agree with you on the 0 - 60 thing. It's a silly, singular measurement. That said, it is the benchmark and future Ms, even with a "gotta have" diet, will have a hard time keeping up with the competition by only putting power down to two wheels. The Germans can get strong headed sometimes . . .

Also, I don't think current M5 owners should be worried since this is "package" and will cost more. The LCI will look very similar to current ones and to most of people, they will not be able to distinguish them. Also, wouldn't it better for us if M5 stays competitive in the market?

My MB dealer is trying to sell E63S by telling me "it is as fast as Ferarri F458 but in family sedan with 5 seats"

Seriously!!

This is unconventional for BMW. Releasing the LCI 5-Series/M5 a year early and now planning to unveil a competition package for the M5 when there's never been one before for any M5 generation, and 2 years too early compared to the E92/90 M3 timeline. The M3's had to wait 3 model years before a competition package was released. M5's have to wait 2 if you count the 2012 model year but only 1 for us U.S. customers. Makes me mad to think our 2013's are only a year old and are already outdated by large measures!

Like everyone else, I think that this is simply a reaction to the E63S. But I don't think the take up rate will be huge. Most of us (including me) use the M as a DD. I have no interest or use for CCB. And I think our wheels are far better looking than the 7-spoke competition package wheels (if that is in fact what they are). I do think the LCI has some nice features compared to our MY13s, and I would like a better sounding OEM exhaust, but this competition package doesn't bother me much.

anyone knows this comp pkg is standard or is it an option ? If it's an option, anyone care to guess how much as the ordering guide should really be out already, since the production is set to begin in just about 2.5 months time.

Agreed, but if true then the only things that really bother me are the updated steering and suspension.

Ya, I don't think I can argue that point.

It's an optional package just like for the M3. But this one will cost in the 5 digits

The tally will be at least $10,000. The article mentions a 5-digit price tag. Carbon ceramics are, what, $9,500 on the M6? I would hazard a guess of $12,000 since it comes with a sweet sport suspension. What are they suggesting, that the standard M5's suspension was designed for non-sporty driving?

LET THE DEPRECIATION BEGIN !
Ain't that the truth!

This makes me realize the reason why BMW made the residual values for the 2013 M5 so horrible last may when they opened the order bank. They must have already known that they were planning to do this back then.

True, they were bad. With ED invoice + pricing that some of us were lucky enough to secure and the option for MSD it actually ended up being a tad bit worse off financially to lease vs. outright purchase...BUT taking into account the put option (due to accident, mechanical issues, LCI, etc.) and not having to deal with the increased depreciation should be reason enough to "rent" these cars.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it, enjoying the next 2.5 years of "rent".
