ECU Tune by Performing Imports
I am trying to gauge the interest in putting together a Group Tune date and time for any forum members that would be held in Phoenix, AZ, during the month of April. I believe I have 3 members already verbally committed to jump in for this tune. Coldlist has this tune has provided the background and his experience with it to which I am believer in now.
Please PM me for the tune details (cost, time involved, etc.) and possible suggestions for any other activities that might be added to this horsepower-palooza. Albert.

Update
Well, so far I have 2 members signed up and one waiting for the date to be firmed up. Ron at Performing Imports says that he may be able to work on a discount for more members that want to sign up.

Other option is that we find another M5 owner or two in SoCal and do it local (would be my preference)

PM sent. By the way, the reason we chose Phoenix was that the location is fairly centralized. 2 or 3 of us from West Texas, possibly 1 from NM and whoever we can get from AZ and SoCal. The other big factor is that Ron from Performing Imports wants to do it in a City where he has access to "friendly shops".

I have received a few questions regarding this tune and most of them center around the same questions that affected the E39 and E60 M5's when they were new or slightly used cars. The two most common questions are: will the tune affect my warranty and will the dealer/factory be able to detect the mod. Both of these would be subject to Magnusson-Moss Act and very much affected by your relationship with your dealer.
I think most of us on the board know that these questions came up with the E39/E60 and dealers did question a small percentage of warranty claims on heavily modded cars. These are 2 very valid questions but have to be an individual choice as to whether you want to test the limits of your car stock or if you are looking for that extra margin of safety that BMW built into your car. I, for one, am willing to accept these possibilities because I want to know what this beast can do. My .02.

Oh for gosh sakes. The magnusson act is completely irrelevent to throwing 100 more hp on a car and tuning the ECU! The act was in place to let you replace a worn part on the car with a non-oem brand for a repair. Stating the mangusson act to the dealer when they deny your tune, or a court for that matter will get you no play.
Fact is if your engine breaks, you are screwed and should be prepared to pay for a new engine. Also goes for tranny and differential. Any parts more hp could effect. Regardless of your relationship with your SA because once a part breaks, its wayyyyyy beyond the control of the SA or even the tech. It goes to bmw NA and the computer info will pull all data such as boost etc and you will be out money to pay for a new engine or repair. So essentially a tune will not effect any maintence or service unless something breaks and then if its expensive you will be hosed and is totally out of the control of your dealer |

I think that some of us that have been modding late model "fast cars" are seeing an "instant replay" of the rhetoric and doubts every time a new model of "fast car" is released/reviewed. There are hazards and minefields with even the simplest of mods which can turn around and bite you.
But, as happens with almost every "fast car" that comes out and is modded - way too much is made of it. The High Performance aftermarket, tuner shops with good reputations and even the factory authorized tuners cannot afford to build "Hand Grenades". The aftermarket stands to lose way too much revenue when things go bad. If one tuner puts out a bad product, the rest of the tuner market will suffer quite a bit. Now, if you were too take all of Ron's options, along with the DP's/exhaust, bolt on some sticky slicks, hire a good 1/4 driver - you would have the makings for a long ride home in an expensive flatbed truck. Am I right Coldlist?

OBD-II tunes arent happening on these new cars anymore with encrypted ECU's. First the ECU will need to be unlocked via pulling it and opening it up.

Ron @ Performing Imports is currently the only US license holder that can perform the ECU tune on our cars. He does not open up the ECU and does "unlock" the encryption code which allows him to tune the ECU. The reason he personally does the tunes is that any quirks, service items, or other codes that come up during the tune can be resolved by him on the spot.
I have inquired and spoken to the other "tuners" advertising a similar tune and have gotten nowhere. They do want the ECU removed and sent to them or worse. In my conversations with Ron, he has predicted what will happen when an unlicensed US tuner tries to tune the F10 - it will be removed or affected by the "learn" section of the ECU. Please read Coldlist's build thread as he has been running this tune trouble free for a few weeks now.
