Knocking/rattle after oil change

On my first start up after changing the oil, the engine made a knocking/rattle sound for about a second and went away.

Oil filter and drain plug were all reinstalled with no leaks and engine oil was at the proper level. Is this normal?

Did you pre-fill the oil filter and housing with oil before installing?

If not, then it's normal. However, it's good practice to do so.

Exactly. Great practice to always fill the oil filter. You probably experienced a short dry start. You'll be okay as long as you don't continue to do it.

I didn't pre-fill the oil filter so this must be it. Thanks.

This is the second time I have done this. Did I possibly damage anything?

Nope, you should be fine. I wouldn't worry about it!

Air in the valve lifters, completely normal if it goes away after a second or two.
Could have the same if the car sits for a while between start ups.
This is because all the oil has been drained to the sump and the oil need a couple of seconds to be redistributed inside the engine.

I have an old car I drive 1-2 times a month, sounds awful every time I start it for 1-2 seconds

If you have it when the engine is running you have lost oil pressure and a huge issue.
