I’m talking about 2018 3 Series vs Tesla, actually on the road.

The figures must be accurate, but I’m interested in what constitutes a sale over there, as here in the UK, a “sale” is a new car registration, and dealers have pre-registered cars sat in garages/ compounds all over the country.

The same system would make sense in the US, as I travel all over the US several times a year, and have hardly seen any.

How do you know all of the F30's you see are 2018 model year? When my co-worker picked up his Model 3 2 weeks ago, he said there were an s-load of Model 3 in the distribution lot awaiting customer delivery.
Maybe the answer is the reported Tesla sales are the fulfillment of the 400,000 pre-order slots yet the cars are not yet delivered to customers. We are on the East Coast outside of Washington DC. But in reality I think there are just simply more F30s on US roads than Model 3's. Here are the sales numbers for MY 2018: (July - Sept is really when Tesla 3's started out selling the 3-series in significant numbers)

Come to DFW I see probably ten to twenty each way of my commute. And in Texas you can't actually buy one from a dealer. I see even more when in Austin.

Thursday night I swear I saw a Model 3 with a new front fascia with a nice looking grille in it. It was in heavy fast-moving traffic off my right 6 and peeled off on the Rt 28 exit off the Dulles Toll Road, so I couldn't get a good look at it. It definitely was a Model 3 because I passed it from behind a few lanes over and saw the single "T" on the trunk. I've googled for it and didn't come up with much. It looked like this, which looks great IMO:

These cars are starting to grow on me and I'd never thought I'd say that. When you're tired of paying $4+/gallon and driving 350-400mi/week. Too bad they not available for lease yet.

Aston Martin-ish
Yeah, that's what I thought, Aston Martin.

Regarding fuel costs, you have to look at the overall cost of ownership and just not the price you pay for fuel. Until EVs get into the $35K price range (as an upper price) they economically don't make sense if purchased. Leasing is a different equation. I drive 800/week. Trust me, I've run the numbers every which way including Sunday.

I just am having a hard time getting over the TV screen. I've seen it live in action, and I just didn't get the wood for it. The map size is great, but the screen is just too big IMO. But every car has compromises. My real issue with it is out in the woods where I live, you need very dim dash lighting so as to be able to pick up the critters that roam freely in the headlights at night. My friend who owns the 3 I was in is going to see how low the screen dims and report back. Living in the burbs, he really never knew dash lighting to be an issue.

They don’t necessarily need to be 35k to make economical sense. Depends on someone’s wants/needs. What’s great about the performance version is that you can get m3 like performance (actually faster for any daily driving) and still have that gas savings. At night it’s not as much the dimming, but the inversion of colors. Background turns black instead of white. Don’t think you would have an issue spotting critters.

Some lowering springs and set of rims...gives it a sportier look as well.

Anything is dependent someone's wants, I agree with that. But needs may be a slightly different subject. I've priced a medium-range RWD with 19" wheels and Autopilot. It's $52,500. Take out the $3,500 tax credit (I doubt I'll get delivery by Dec 31st). So, it's a $49,000 car. Using it as a 35,000-mile/year daily driver there are a lot of great cars for $35,000. $14K buys a lot of gasoline and maintenance on top of no range/proximity/seasonal limits. Understood that the Tesla 3 has more than adequate range for daily use, and there is the supercharger network, but it still has limitations where a gasoline car has none. But for my commute in the winter, it leaves me with 50-60 miles of reserve, which I'm not that comfortable with. It'd be nice if the Monroney window sticker had Federal MPG ratings EVs that include a Winter range rating.

The screen is too large and it sure about it being offset. Are there accessibility features for the display? I use invert colors on my iPhone and turn the brightness down. It's the cheapest nicest looking EV. You're then left with Prius, Nissan, etc. I may end up leasing a Prius, but the acceleration figures for the TM3 are too good to overlook.

I live close to a supercharger station and just hanging out for 30 min gives me 170 miles so I don't even need to charge at home.

Looks great!
My Garmin GPS units for both my motorcycle and car use the inverse-color method for controlled brightness, so I'm familiar with the technique in an automotive setting. But with both of those devices, I can simply turn them off if they are distracting and still have vital information from a optimized color scheme at very low light levels. Where as from the little I know of the Tesla 3 display, the map stays lit all the time and the left side of the 1/5th screen (approx.) has the car's speed and other vital information displayed. If I know where I'm going, say like home after work and don't need the map, it'd be nice if the screen displayed only vital information in a dimmed setting.

Saab cars, before GM bought it, used to have a night time function for the gauge cluster that only lit the speedometer at night, and other gauges remained dark unless needed. Being the Tesla's screen is fully programmable, hopefully Elon sees fit to make it Customer configurable at some point.

Elon could give it real gauges and put the info screen a bit lower.

Audi does its interactive gauges very well. Elon should follow suit.

So I got some more time in a Model 3 on Thursday. It was a bit over 30 minutes as a back seat passenger. I have to say other than the e-drivetrain, there's not much to this car to admire. The back seat cushion is far too low, which is directly related to the depth of the floor. There is no toe room under the front seat to give you those few needed inches to stretch your legs out, leaving your thighs unsupported and your body weight on spread on your tailbone. That was the most uncomfortable I've been in a car in a long time, and that goes back to 1970's era econoboxes, where the design criteria for the back seat was politely to say, "lackluster".

The Model 3's ride is horrible. It is poorly damped and harshly sprung. You can feel the car struggling to manage with the 4,000 pounds of sprung weight. Some of the materials used for the interior are admirable, but most are not and cheap appearing. As an example, the integration of the rear door arm ledge into the B pillar was just an oversight where a squarish block form meets a rounded form (the B pillar); if this were a GM car, magazines would write paragraphs on just that design feature alone - it just looks bad. The interior is quite bland but decently manufactured for what it is. With all the discussion in E90 Post about interiors and how Audi reigns supreme, the Tesla's interior is a far cry in comparison. I got to observe the big screen even more. Not being able to turn off the map is just annoying in my opinion. The squarish screen unfortunately contrasts too much with the rounded shapes of the rest of the interior. The screen would have fit in quite well with a 1980's Pontiac Fiero.

While kudos must go to Musk for starting a car company from the ground up, especially one that has delved into a an engineering discipline not well supported by the automotive industry in a lot of respects because it is new, I think the Model 3 reflects the difficulties of such an endeavor.

A couple of weeks ago the NY-Metro area was surprised by a snow storm that crippled roadways. People that had a 15 minute commute were in traffic for 5-6 hours.

Whenever I hear another one of my friends tell me a horror story of their short commute turning into hours and hours, I think of what a disaster this would be if they were in an EV. You might have plenty of range on a normal day, but a bad traffic jam could mean you're going to be waiting for a tow truck.

Uh, why? Consumption from climate control is negligible and you're not moving. This is no different than a gas car.
