White Smoke From Exhaust

Little back story on this 2015 M5

about 30 days ago I got a couple of random heat warnings, when starting the car cold temp gauge was at 160 and usually went away within a couple miles of driving. Figured it was possibly the thermostat or sensor and planned on having it checked out at the next scheduled maintenance.

about 2 weeks ago I got my first low oil notice (damn M cars drink oil like they do gas) took it to the dealer the same day and they topped it off with a quart, notification went away.

Today I notice a little more white smoke coming from the exhaust on my morning start, drove to work (approx 15 miles) and parked her for 4 hours, I got to lunch and i can see the white smoke in the back up cam. On the way home from work there was even more smoke to the point someone waived me down as I was exiting the freeway. Pulled into the garage and within seconds the garage was filled with smoke and gas like fume.

To me sounds like possibly cracked head but wanted to get some input, she's going into the dealer on Wednesday for those that will comment take it to dealer.

I'd hazard not driving it at all until the dealer has made a full diagnosis.

Probably oil blowby. I had it too. It'll go away in many tens of thousands of miles like mine did.

Sounds excessive. Get it towed to the dealer and have them diagnose it.

def would'nt wanna drive her ! Esp if your consuming more than the approx (normal) amount of oil

had it happen to my x5m , seal's blew in the turboo's and had blow by which in turn caused massive oil consumption , odor's , blk soot all over back of car and worst part was the cat's where soak'd w oil so when ever they heated up the fume's inside the car would make you dizzy !

of course that was all from me driving , beating and being lazzzzy but end of day they replaced the vehicle for me !

White smoke = possibly burning coolant

Blue smoke = oil burning

I think that his " blue " smoke is not to a point being blue yet, bad valve seats will get you that effect for a two seconds or so..... and that is reeeaallll oil consumption. His case is not as severe but needs attention.
Had the same issue with one of my vehicles but the same like one comment up top, my problem went away slowly with mileage.
Will see what develops from that.
I would presume that dealer will take some action and turbos will get the attention ( first ) and then with the temp issues software ( second ).

Let's see

Could be a loose oil cooler line. If so, it'll blow oil under the car and when it hits the hot exhaust it'll burn off white. Happened to me, had to have my car towed, endoscope the whole engine, and redo the timing on the car.

Update from the dealer was kind of half assed "Cylinder 8 has 65lbs of compression" and claiming that it has something to do with the DME. Waiting on BMWNA to step in and let me know what's next. Not very happy with the response or the amount of time it's taking to get an estimated time of resolution.

...or DME/mechanical control over the valves for that cylinder holding the valves open - its one of the ways these engines modulate boost and why they don't have blow-off valves and so maintain boost response.

The 1999-2001 E39 famously used oil. The F10 famously doesn't. I'd get any oil consumption in an F10 checked asap. Mine has used half a litre in 7000 miles of road driving and 70 laps of the Nordschleife. The only time I've heard of an F10 consuming large quantities was a 2012 car which needed new valve cover gaskets (which turned out to be a 20hr job, so keep that warranty intact!).

Also, I always understood white smoke in the exhaust to be water ingression. Oil burns with blue smoke no? Sounds like a gasket has gone somewhere. I'm very curious to hear what the dealer has to say on this......

Got white smoke coming from exhaust as well after making a couple dyno pulls yesterday. It's not a lot and have no other symptoms or CEL.

I had lots of white smoke out the exhaust, misfiring codes (plugs and coils were new), eventually died on me while driving with fuel supply error message.

It was my low pressure fuel pump in-tank and possibly EKPS unit as well. Had both replaced and all is well.

I'll continue to drive until error codes up come. I drove it home after the dyno and nothing felt out of place.
