Oil Catch Can?
I spoke to Frank Smith from Tuning Tech FS when he flash tuned my MY13 the other day. He said that he is very close to releasing an oil catch can. He stated that he has seen so much oil blow-by in our intake plenums its ridicules. Very common for large motor turbo vehicles.
This blow- by will contribute to oil loss and, after all, oil is not exactly great for combustion when trying to make power. Is there anyone else planning on an catch can, or anyone with any additional feedback? |

I've seen one intake system where it had catch can lines welded to an intake similar to MSR. I bought the intake and catch can system from Travis1807, I've just yet to install it. While the S63 and S63TU have different systems (yours is better than mine), this thread has a pic of the system I was talking about in an S63TU.

Nearly had a heart attack when I saw the ASR name... hey Juan
As I see oil coating the turbo air inlets on my M5 from the PCV system so will definety do something. As I am running OEM(ish) airboxes I will need to come up with another location as its tight in the engine bay of the M5- may be rout the piping through to infront of the rad and locate the catch can there- the cooler location would be good for condensing the oil/vapour mix anyway. |

I'm not sure what's wrong with ASR, nor do I know about any details of their kit, I just figured I'd mention it.
Yeah, I know nothing of how a catch can system even works, tips and tricks, etc so I'll be doing more research before attempting to install what I've got so far. Last edited by m5james; 11-02-2016 at 10:09 PM.. |

Do a search, they ripped off some M5 owners, leaving them to recover their stripped cars with missing engines etc and loosing many thousands of dollars... do a search for M5Ranger / M5 Junky / ASR / M5 E60 Turbo.
I can't believe they are still trading or befalling some sort of fate... |

Ouch, I had no idea. Google searches show they're no longer in business...good. Nevertheless I'm guessing Travis just used their pics as a reference and inspiration for his design.

All good.
A good catch can system is needed on these engines to stop fouling the inlet tracts and inlet valves plus the issue of the oil mist reducing the octane, causing knock and retarding ignition timing and reducing power + increasing heat. I have seen the oil film in the inlets so there is real evidences of crank case vapours making it past the OEM PCV catch system. Please post some photos and feedback when you have done James. I am considering an open system so the catch can vents to atmosphere instead of back into the inlets. It may be smelly so the vent may need considering. |

Our CCV system sucks to say the least. This just proves I need to hurry up with the catch can system as well as meth/water because I bet there's tons of buildup inside the heads as well. I sent these pics to my tech buddy and he said it looks normal.
PS - ignore the torn tube, that's what prompted this whole disassembly.

Yep, normal- same for my M5 as your x5M. Thats what promted me to look into this further, I though it migh be failing turbos but if you look at where the PCV connects (before the turbo) you will see this is where the oil has come from.

Lighting sucks on the RH picture, but it looks to be very little residue left in the intercooler. It's still known what oil does to compression, deposits, etc so it does need to be addressed long term.

My intercooler internals looked clean, after looking at them, it was a shock when I looked at the turbos!
Its 100% a must have mod- just need to deside if I will vent to atmosphere post catch can or back yo the inlets. As I am running modified OEM airboxs I will have to mount the catch can(s) in front of the radiator so guess if I put the catch can vent filters just by the inlet tracts so some of the potencial smell could be drawn in by the engine. |

That black box at the front is my oil catch tank custom fabricated by a local workshop. It connects to the two 'oil exit ducts' and has an overflow pipe which leads to the bottom of the engine bay. Hence the inlets to the intake are covered by rubber seals.

Excellent, that might just be the only space we have in the engine bay with OEM filters- do you have any more details on the custom CCV catch can? Do you know if its internally baffled etc, any drawings??

I suppose I dont need a kit and can just piece one together.
M5james - the fitting that attaches to the stock hose is that a standard size or was that machined? Can you let me know what size that is on one end not the AN side (looks like an 8 AN?) but the side that went to the stock hose.....it looks like the stock hose just clipped perfectly onto that. |
