Started the car and after the cold start was over and engine had warmed up to ~200F, I recorded this:
New hear and heard the horror stories of these engines, wanted to be proactive and educate myself. Your assistance is much appreciated! |

the high pressure fuel pump sounds like one of those lawn sprinklers that ticks as it sprays across the yard. Thats how I describe it even though it sounds a little different.

This is similar noise to ZANDERZA's 'Is this knock' thread a few threads down.
Check it out and decide if it's loose exhaust manifold as he says or gearbox seal/damper . |

Right off the bat I can't hear anything I would classify as not normal. Though a video and PC speakers is not the best way to diagnose sounds.
The fuel injectors normally tick quite loud, that is why cars have these huge acoustic engine covers. I remember driving with my windows rolled down 20 years ago in my E36 and wondering if my valves were making that ticking sound or if it was the injectors, it was the injectors. Have it checked as you say, but be prepared for the "it's normal" answer.

Totally.. I'm prepared for the "its normal" but I always like to ask my SA the cause or rationale - e.g. fuel injectors, exhaust manifold, etc. Tells me if they have done their due diligence or just ran a diagnostic tool to tell me a story.
Btw, those E36 days were simply EPIC! |
