See, these are the issues that keep me from pulling the trigger tomorrow for the next pretty e39, e60, or f06 that I find. Constant personal struggle...

I would only use an oil with designation 0-30 or maybe 0-40,the thinner viscosity ensures quicker circulation than a 5W or 10W at startup when cold, the most critical time and especially with those tight tolerance rod bearings.

LL-04 & LL-01 Oils

Longlife-04 oils must not be used in BMW spark-ignition engines in
countries outside Europe (EU plus Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein).

5) Longlife-04 oils are only approved for spark-ignition engines in Europe (EU plus Switzerland, Norway
and Liechtenstein). They must not be used outside this area.

Therefore, for petrol engines, use only oils designated BMW Longlife-01 or BMW LL-01

LL-1 oils are for high sulfur content fuels - as in USA fuels.

LL-4 oil is for low sulfur content fuels - as in Germany/Europe fuels

Cheers

Most of these "issues" are overblown because of the internet. Sure there are known cases of failure in all generations. I can say from years of experience that the S62 in the E39 is very reliable. 282k on mine. Never been opened up beyond superficial gaskets like valvecovers.

0-40 too thin for this engine, it gets very hot
With 5w 40 my car does not require to add oil.

I don't mind topping up every 1500 to 1800 mi knowing that my oil is covering every single surface in that engine on startup. That rod bearing gap is thinner than a human hair, go figure.

You state that LL04 oil is fine in Europe so what exactly is your point?

G’day
My point is this :

in Europe LL-04 can be used in place of LL-01, so you could theoretically say that an oil meets both. But that is not the case in the US.

LL-01 can be used with both high-sulfur as well as low-sulfur gas. LL-04 should only be used with low sulfur gas, if you're going to be following the OLM.

Negative. That's what BMW put in my replacement engine (0W-30). Likely due to my local climate.
