M5 wins comparo with some heavy hitters (Road & Track)

Did anyone else get their latest Road and Track in the mail today? Page 52 titled "V-8 Supercars"

Porsche Panamera Turbo
Mercedes Benz E63 4Matic
Audi RS7
Jaguar XFR-S
BMW M5 Competition Pack

and the BMW came out on top.

Good comparison. Only question I have, why is the M's passenger mirror retracted on page 59?

If I remember correctly, they got the M5 to do 3.8 Seconds for 0 - 60. It was not the fastest of the group. They also mentioned how frustrating it is to activate the the launch control system.

There are far more complicating things than activating LC on DCT cars. I see this complaint way too often and I'm always confused whats so complicated about it? Do they want a big red lc button like japanese cars?

If they can do 0-60 in 3.8 when bmw claims 4.2s, I wonder what the new M3 will do since Bmw claims 3.9, which is fast enough as conservative as it might be.

Well, what the OP didn't say is that the E63 was the quickest car in the test and totally kicked the M5's ass in acceleration.

It beat it to 60 mph and in a 1/4 mile by half a second. Also it had a slightly higher trap speed.

Since when M cares about straight line numbers?

What M should be worried is why their cars are too heavy, out-handled, out-fun-driven by AMG and Cadillac.

I just read the online R&T article, and they chose the M5 CP because it WAS the most fun to drive. Unlike the guys over at Motor Trend, the R&T testers liked the fact it had RWD and was a bit of a handful. They felt although it was more difficult to drive fast, it was more rewarding as well. The M5 was the hardest car to launch for acceleration #s but did note that it was faster above 100mph than some of the other cars tested.

That's good to hear. I hope I've made the right decision.

I will get my CP M5 in few days.

M5 with the comp package should have run 11.69 with a good driver.

This confirms what we know; the M is just flat nasty from a roll, but can't run with the AWD cars off the line. Look at the trap speeds...

Surprising how much lower the Panny T's trap speed is than the rest of the group.

M5 wins comparo with some heavy hitters

Hey all F10 owners out there. This is my first time on this particular forum. I felt compelled to share a recent subjective comparison from the March/April issue of Road & Track. The M5 Competition finished first overall against the Audi RS7, Jaguar XFR-S, MB E63S, and the Porsche Panamera Turbo.

Steering feel, handling, ride, engine pull, exhaust note, brake pedal feel, driver comfort/support, exterior styling, interior ergonomics/styling, and gearbox were all subjectively graded by multiple writers/drivers on a 0-5 scale . The M5 received 39 of 50 possible points, tops in this pool of super sedans.

It's a good read and worthwhile picking up a copy at your local newsstand. For that reason, I will not summarize the article with exception of this statement:

"Driving the M5 is serious, countersteering, palm-sweating work. It's also serious fun. That's why it's the winner."

Congrats to all you owners!

***Edit, just realized I double posted. Oh well
