WTH: Escort Passport 9500ix FAIL

I have a hardwired Escort Passport 9500ix and Escort Live in my whip. On the way to Santa Monica (10 freeway West) this morning before PCH, I passed a slow car on the "fast" lane. Just after I passed the vehicle going about 80 I saw a CHP officer with a radar/laser gun targeting vehicles on the freeway. Thankfully I wasn't going too fast and he didn't pull me over; however, my Escort FAILED to pick up the signal and alert me.

Are CHP officers using a different band or should I now start thinking of buying the Escort Max or V1? Any input appreciated.

There are 3 possible explanations:

1. Your Escort was powered down.

2. The CHP was using lidar but was not targeting your vehicle.

3. The CHP was using instant on radar but wasn't actively shooting while you were passing by.

Either way, no need to complain unless you received a ticket!!!!

Agree with what mlwnd said.

Also if the cop was using quick trigger with radar, the 9500ix is very poor at picking that up. V1 and STIR+ are best with I/O. Esp STIR+.

Laser doesn't not "splash" as much as radar and if he was using that you likely didn't get targeted and therefore the 9500 did not go off.

My Bel Stir Plus and V1 combo saved my ass more than I can count. I can't imagine driving without them.

Interesting. I could see that he was actively using the gun and maybe he didn't point it at me, but I assumed that if I was in the general vicinity that there would always be some "residual" signal from the laser/radar gun that would trigger an alert on my 9500ix. A 5 second alert, would be fine, but I guess that is a wrong assumption on my part. Don't get me wrong, the 9500ix has saved me countless times before but this time was weird.

Must be laser. Laser doesn't have residual signal.

When you see a chippy holding a gun its usually laser. They are either parked sideways shooting out the side window, or they are standing outside their car. I only get radar (Ka) hits when they're in motion, or sitting in their car parked parallel to traffic. In these situations they are using their builtin radar equipment.

All that to say, I don't think an alert would have made a difference for you in this situation, if you had been going fast enough to earn a ticket. The alert would likely only inform you that your speed had been read.

I am sure it was lidar. Iv'e seen a consistent increase of laser usage in the past few months here in SoCal. 73, 241, 405, 55, 133, 91, and 5 - from North San Diego county all the way up and over the Tejon Pass.

Like others said there is much less scatter with laser...especially at close range. If I remember correctly, at 1000' the laser circle is 36"...not big at all

Just like radar you need to be able to distinguish from laser falses (parking/speed sensor, sun glint, sunlight from low on the horizon, or random laser source) or actual threat. The problem is with lidar if it was an actual targeting by a LEO, boom, ticket. No warning.

PM me or meet at C&C and we can talk about it more!

I have Laser Interceptor and V1. Driving home last night there was a cop parked off the main road, clearly waiting to "bust" people. I picked up nothing on my V1 or Li. Most Sheriff's and some cops leave their radar on all the time. Cops looking to nab people arent dumb. They don't need a POP gun, they park at a vantage point where they can look at traffic far down the road without them being seen, they identify clear outliers, then flick on the standard radar gun when you're close to effectively give you minimal reaction time, or squeeze the laser as you get close.

We play the game to get past them, they know the games we play, and they play their own. Our investments aid in our mission but should never be taken as full proof insurance. Just my 2 cents.

Impetuous - You are correct. For the pop try the Escort Redline. It is a bit more sensitively then the V1, providing a longer reaction time and the change to see the pop further ahead. For the laser we are just screwed at the angle.

I would agree, maybe he wasn't aiming at u. I have this set up (3months). Laser has gone off twice and once it saved my ass. Going well over speed limit.
