2016 991S PDK vs 2017 FType R which one?

I've tried to beat carswitchitis but it's coming back...right now prompted by the fall reduction in prices we see up here in the great white north

2 cars just showed up on autotrader that piqued my interest.

2016 CPO 991S at 110K cdn 23000 km
2017 f type coupe R at 90K cdn 8000 km

991S is optioned right, dark blue metallic, PASM, sport design wheel, sport chrono, satin black 20 inch wheels
the f type is optioned ok, white with the carbon 20's

the way I break it down:
the 991s is more expensive but will depreciate at a much lower rate...heck given it's NA engine, it might just hold it's value
the ftype will lose 10000 a year guaranteed, 2016's are going at 80k
the 991S is also a little more practical...with more interior and trunk space, although the f type is AWD

so financially the 991S might actually the better call, I also value porsche reliability, I like smaller cars as well which the 991 is (much narrower)...but that v8 THOUGH

I have never driven a 991S (I had a 981S), but I don't doubt that I will enjoy it, I loved the f type R I last drove...

confused...

thoughts?

Porsche, all day. Everyday. Seriously, all the points you make are the reason to buy the Porsche. The Jag is beautiful to be sure and that V8 sound is sublime, but you are 100% correct regarding the depreciation and I suspect on the reliability as well.

F type. Porsches are just a big fat cliche with little character (after the 997). Buy character.

Have you ever driven one? The 991S with an xpipe exhaust is incredible.

OP - Porsche and it’s not even close. You’ll get the most bang for your buck with a 2012-2013 though. Same car as a 16 but will be at the lower end of 991 values so it won’t depreciate as much. I bought mine for $58k in 2016 and sold it for $67k in March. That will never happen with a Jaguar.

Porsche, without a doubt. Shouldn't even need to ask this question.

Of the two, I'd go with the 911, but I'm not sure I'd pay $110k for the outgoing model. at least, I would wait till the 992 is on the street and buy the same car for a lot less.

"Character" is a subjective word, but besides a gorgeously designed exterior, I don't think the F-type has character at all. It's fast but steering, chassis and throttle feel numb. Powertrain is 100% luxury car, but then they stick a loud exhaust on it that feels totally out of place, and they tuned it with the original burble tune that created this whole dumb craze that I will never forgive them for

yes have driven many Porsches including the 991...street and track. Cayman, Boxster, 964, 993, 996, 997, 991, S, GTS, etc etc. I really didn't care at all for the 991. Felt too luxurious for me. They've lost the rear engine madness too (they're pretty much mid engined in their current layout, although referred to as rear engined).

Like them don't love them. For me modern Porsches are numb and dull. The last really good Porsche I drove was a 997 S but it wasn't for me. Almost bought a Cayman R when I was buying a 1M. Have almost bought a Porsche several times now but something else always captures me more.

I think I a lot of people want Porsches because other people do.

They're good cars but not worth the absurd levels of blind praise they get.

I would argue the BULK of the engine is over the rear wheels not behind it. It's definitely not classically rear engined where all of the engine is behind the rear wheels...

Yes it is still rear engined but Porsche are slowly moving the engine forward with every generation...

Wouldn't even be a question for me, the Porsche. The F-Type is fun, but the 911 is something truely special.

That, and as you've noted it will likely lose none of its value, and will potentially appreciate.

I don’t think there is any engine over the centerline of the rear wheeel and maybe a few inches within the wheel diameter. The transmission casting transmission and axle pretty much spanned the diameter of the wheel.

Yes, that is the transmission. The big bulk of solid metal is the engine, it is clearly a rear-engine layout. I made a picture to help:

Not that it's a big deal, but yes, it's clearly a rear-engined car. You can't practically move the engine OVER the axle, because the higher CG would be extremely detrimental to handling. What defines rear, mid or front is where the CENTER of mass of the engine is located relative to the axle. People get a little bent out of shape about the "front engined" cars that are called mid-engine because the engine center of mass is behind the front axle, but that IS technically mid-engine.

Porsche may be trimming overhangs and trying to cut the length wherever they can, I'm sure that's been on the books for years, but until they decide to make the 911 a mid-engine like the 911 RSR, the fact that it is clearly rear-engine won't be changing.

Thoughts are for that price and the type of car you seem to be looking at, maybe you should also take a look at an AMG gts. Mileage might be a bit higher at that price range, but I think it’s a car worth looking at.

As a long time fan of Porsche's and a Porsche owner and someone who has actively looked outside of the Porsche brand

Buy the Porsche. You'll be happy you did.

I looked elsewhere and nothing quite lived up to the hype/bs/feeling/infatuation quite like a Porsche.

F-Type, by a country mile.

Looks & sounds way better. 911 has better handling dynamics but that's about it. Unless you're Randy Pobst & tracking your car everyday go for the F-Type. It'll keep you happier on a daily basis where it matters most - on the street.
