POLL - ALL F10 M5 Owners Drivetrain Malfunction

As per the title. Please vote. I am also curious if this happens under hard acceleration or just normal driving. It seems that this is a very common issue that BMW may need to fix or tell us why it is happening.

I get the DT MAL under HARD acceleration close to top speed (US).

Since I had the PP Performance piggybags removed and the DME Leib tune installed, it has never happened again. On my car it was due to a fuel map requiring modification. Car was running too rich under WOT.

Mine is y see hard excelleration. But it is not consistent. Never happened at the track (I'm surprised) but usually around 145mph using full auto mode. I wonder if it's a fuel pump thing.

Question is how often do you drive at full throttle/red line and do you subject the car to sustained hard driving, i.e. is there an underlying cause to the effect in this instance?

Spinny02 I believe this poll should be expanded to ask is how does one drive in general, not just at the time of failure, i.e. scale from gently all the time to red line/full throttle wherever feasible, cornering style, track use, etc. It would also be interesting to see where stock vs piggy/tune sits against this scale. Results of such a poll may be better represented as a matrix rather than a straightforward list. My purely speculative view is that the DT MAL is most likely related to how the car is generally driven rather than at the time of failure or specifically related to a tune (which will increase potential for failure). I doubt it's a manufacturing/design defect.

Great comments. Agreed on the matrix but i don't think this site has that option? I also think you are correct on driving style.

Over 35% get the error. That leads me to believe its more of a design issue or induced on purpose for protection. When purchasing a car with 560-75 HP and an "M" logo BMW should expect that the customers are going to put it to the test. Errors likes these should not be common on a stock car.

Thanks for the votes. This is good stuff.

I drive hard when there's no traffic. Maybe once or twice a week. So far no issues when I drive hard (S3/shifting right before redline). The techs at the dealership were just as confused as I was when I got the error @ 65mph.

Perhaps a software glitch? The failsafe idea from Spinny does otherwise makes sense. No chance of 50 consecutive launch controls here.

I usually get overtaken by Prius drivers (///M card duly handed in), but do occasionally use WOT or S3/near redline. My car only gets driven once a fortnight or so + the DCT changes are imperceptible in all modes other than the change in engine tone; perhaps my car's learnt not give the full extent? I can recall driving a dealer demo E46 SMG and in the most aggressive setting a 2nd to 3rd gear change resulted in a jolt/noise that felt as though the rear axle had been torn from the car!

Got multiple times, hard acceleration in hot weather. Both times turned out to be faulty coil. With tune and without.

Got it once.
Car was low on gas-75 mi range..sputtered a bit on start up after a fill up and threw a Dt mal.
I Locked it and let it sit for 5 min.. Fired it up and has been perfect since, at any speed. I now keep the gas above 1/4 at all times.
No tune.

I just got one time with 650i, but that car was one of the first F13 650i arrived in US in September 2011 and software update fixed it.
OP, it was good idea to ask how many people with and without tuning got this error! This way we could recognize the effect of tuning on the cars as well !
