But why do you use an oil weight that's not recommended? My manual calls for 0w40 and 0w30 as an alternative.
Not sure what you mean not recommended, this is from M5 online manual.

I believe at some point BMW discontinued 5W30, and moved everyone to 0w30. Then was re-introduced , I would thing that would explain them removing and adding it. Mine is July 2016 production car. Had similar issue with MY16 X5 as dealer didn't have 5W30 that was recommended by BMW and used 0W30

0W40 all the way, thin enough to get round the engine quick when cold and higher temp protection when using the revs. 5W30 is not recommended here as it's too narrow a viscosity range for all models 2011 to 2016.

Very interesting! It looks like 0W30 might be a bit too thin? At least for the California summers and our engines producing immense amounts of heat.

5W30 would be a nice "in-between", but I won't run that since it's not recommended in both my online and physical manuals.

5W40 seems to be a no-go over 0W40.

Still weird how our manuals are pointing to different grades. Did you check thru your app or the printed manual?

Yes sir, checked them both today to make sure. It's especially weird since both are 2016 too.

I have a 2015 and my manual says to use only SAE 0w-30, 5w-30 as an alternative.

I've read the BMW 0w-40 was designed for the turbo M cars but that's been discontinued.

BMW's recommendations are all over the place.

It's written Castrol on the oil cap so I don't understand why ppl are using different brands possibly because of fancy packaging and 'made in Germany' on them, it's only Castrol Edge which is good enough for me. The BMW oil packaging has been a little confusing recommending 5W30,I don't know what it is now in the packaging which is Shell derived. Some were using 10W60 at the cars launch which some owners used in the previous E60 V10.

Not in US, our oil caps don't have recommended brand on it.

Hmm. I agree that 0w 40 is the best bet, but I have a 2013 and the dealer uses 0w 30.....

Makes no difference what year,2011 to 2016 it's the same base engine. I buy my Edge online and put in a box in the trunk for the dealer, it comes in 4 ltr cans so two of them plus 1.5 litres in a third to make the 9.5 ltr total making it easy for the tech.

I think I'm going to switch to 0w40 because I like the cold start protection. I'm only debating it because my car doesn't burn any oil 🤞 so wondering if I should just continue with 0w30. It takes forever to heat up as it is, could only imagine what 5w40 etc takes lol
