for those with over 100k miles with no engine failure, what oil wt are you running?
Trying to get good data on what oil weight is best for the s63tu engine. I think there are people who think 0w30 is too thin for turbo engine which I agree with. but BMW recommends 0w30.
so can the owners who put more than 50-100k+ miles with particular oil weight with no engine failure respond with what oil weight he/she is running? Would be nice if you can state if you're running an aftermarket tune, how often the oil is changed on average, and whether plugs, injectors, o2 sensors have been changed. If you had engine failure, I think people would also want to know what oil weight you were using & anything else you think would be pertinent. Thanks all! I also use 5W-40 as recommended by two separate, reputable BMW independent shops and a custom tuner. PM if you'd like to know the shops/tuner.
I used Motul X-Cess at first then switched over to Liqui Moly Molygen (green bottle) a couple years ago. My car is on a custom BM3-based tune with high-flow cats and Meisterschraft exhaust. Currently, 60k miles. One thing strange is my oil burn/consumption was about 1 liter every 750-800 miles with Motul. That is a bit on the higher side, but still considered within acceptable limits. I am now seeing about 1 liter every 1200-1500 miles with Liqui Moly after about three oil changes. The weight is the same, so I'm not sure what would cause the difference between brands. |

I use 0w40 and 5w40 but have run BMW 5w30. Castrol Euro, Motul and Liqui Moly. LL01 is the spec to look for.

5w 40 liquid moly and getting close to 170k.
I usually top up quarts with whatever I find on the shelf though. As long as it's LL01. No tunes on mine. There's a post somewhere with my lab test. I'll do another soon. |

I watched a youtube video making a good case why we shouldn't go higher on the colder number and go lower on the hot number. Mobil1 0w40 fits the bill, but my bottle doesn't say LL01. I'll look at castrol edge 0w40 if walmart has them to see if it is the LL01 spec.

I use Mobil 1 0w40. Car feels happy all the time, even when cold.

27k miles here, I use 5w 40 (any brand as long as meeting the specs) based on the cheapest price. I do oil change and filter every 5k.
