Engine Oil
Hi Guys
Just a quick question but what oil are you using to top up between services? I was quoted £22 +VAT for 1 ltr of BMW oil which if I am not mistaken is Shell oil in a BMW bottle I have looked in the book and all it says is SAW 0W-30 but would take any advice available as I don't want to waste money on a BMW bottle when I can but the same oil in a different bottle lol Cheers.

Be careful, don't mix different brands of oil together. Yes they maybe the same spec in terms of viscosity, but they are different blends. If you get your car serviced at BMW and don't provide your own oil then stick with BMW branded oil. After all it's the live blood of your engine.

Does anyone know if BMW has gone back to Castrol from Shell Helix?
I had my car serviced last month at local dealership and was told that they used Castrol LL04 0W-30 which is rather odd since last year they used Shell Helix 0W-30. At the time, I understood that they moved away from Castrol but now seems they are back to them. I usually keep a stock of 1l bottles for regular top ups and use the same brand as used by BMW for servicing. So I have some Shell Helix lying about which I won't use if they used a different brand. I know it is not end of the world for most people but I am paranoid when it comes to engine oil and don't like mixing. |

This is quite odd. Not just the different brand it is different grade too. Anyone else got 5w-30 from BMW?
I think it is better to have thicker 5w-30 for older engine but I am still surprised they are using different oils across different dealerships within U.K. Maybe, I never noticed this before and is a common practice.. |

If you can call at your dealer will they not top up your free of charge? Assuming they are not an hour's drive from you of course!
Alternatively it might be worth buying a 4 litre container of oil to get the price down. Euro car parts have it on offer most of the time. |

A good parts contact is Douglas Park BMW Hamilton, ask for Martin Seggie, parts manager.
I buy all my parts from him always at good price and more important the correct parts. They do mail order too, I'm sure he will keep you right with the facts. |

I will probably buy Castrol if that's what they used. Still got 1 year of service pick left so I am sorted for another year. |
