Official Thread for Retrofitting to the 2014+ LCI F10 M5 / F12/F13 M6 Steering Wheel

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I thought that I would make this thread separate and official. This is for anyone that wants to upgrade their 2013 Pre-LCI F10 M5 to the updated 2014-2016 F10 M5 Steering Wheel which is the same as the F12/F13 M6 Steering Wheel. The information that is currently out there on the forum and other internet places is very poor on how to do this and has been for a long time. Since I have painstakingly done all of the research I thought this needs to be shared with the community. I may also offer instructions later on how to install a new steering wheel on to your M5 or M6 and how to install custom paddle shifters and trims as well. I politely ask the mods to make this thread a sticky.

Here is a list of parts with an explanation for any one that wants to do a retrofit in the future:

-32307846034: 2014+ LCI M5 or F12/F13 M6 leather steering wheel WITHOUT heat.

-32307846035: 2014+ LCI M5 or F12/F13 M6 leather steering wheel WITH heat.

-32307846029: Front trim cover piece for the front of the steering wheel. Covers the bottom portion where the vibration generator is.

-32307848270: Rear cover to the back of the steering wheel

-32307848330: Wire harness for those that DO NOT have the Drivers Assistance Package.

-32307848332: Wire harness for those that DO have the Drivers Assistance Package. This harness has an extra black plug that will connect into the part number: 7849393 module and then that module connects to the vibration generator.

-32307848333: Screw set. Comes with 4 long silver screws and 4 short black screws.

-32311159951: Main Hex Bolt that secures the steering wheel to the steering column (you will most likely not need this part though).

-32307845795: Airbag.

-61319282644: Paddle Shifters. Comes with both of them.

-61317849410: Control Buttons for M cars only. There are also two other part numbers for the button controls but they are for non-M cars or cars with Active Cruise Control.

-61317849393: Module for connecting the heated steering wheel and the vibration generator. If you do not have the Drivers Assistance Package then 2 of the plugs on this module will not be connected. Here is what the unit looks like on the ECSTuning website. This part is also not listed on RealOEM.com or parts diagram catalog that BMW uses.

https://www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-...l/61317849393/

-32337849416: Vibration Generator for those that have the Drivers Assistance Package.

Hope this helps anyone in the future that wants to do a retrofit as the information that was out there in the forums and elsewhere on the internet before was not as complete as this.

Also as far as costs and prices go, there are a number of places you can to go to purchase all of these parts. The best one that I found for most parts is ECSTuning. They offer substantial discounts on all of the parts and if you choose free ground shipping you can save a lot of money. But if you want to go your local dealership and order them from there you can and the prices at the dealership are always negotiable. On average I would say though, that to do a full retrofit it will cost between $2,500 - $3,500 U.S. Dollars depending on where you buy the parts from and which parts you actually need, because not everyone has the Executive Package or Drivers Assistance Package.

Outstanding post! I will be using this to my advantage soon.

Do you know if the electronic steering wheel with race display will work on pre-LCI cars?

Best,
Brad

Yes it will work on Pre-LCI M5's and M6's. Of course you won't have steering wheel heat but if you have the Drivers Assistance Package, you will still need all of the parts for that stuff.

I believe the M Performance wheel includes those pieces, but I'm not 100% certain.

Have you seen a pre-LCI wheel with the LCI paddle shifters? Would that work?

I don't think that the paddleshifters are compatible between the wheels. I haven't checked on the part numbers for the Pre-LCI paddleshifters though.

thanks for the post. i started to build mine on ecs tuning website. i couldn't find everthing like the airbag and the control module shows that its been discontinued. so no heated wheel. .

i am already at 1200.00 without the module and airbag. it would easily be 2500.00, unless you can buy a wheel second hand or airbag.

You can buy the control module from ECS Tuning. They have it.

Yes the airbag is difficult to get. Try either, getbmwparts.com or your local dealer. The problem is the shipping, since it's considered an explosive device.

It's amazing how expensive these parts are. I'm upgrading my Porsche steering wheel from the 2014-2016 design to the 2017 design. Cost is $2000. However I can net about $1100 for the old wheel and airbag, so I come out ahead with a net cost of $900. However I also decided to customize the new wheel through DCTMS which cost another $700.

It is ridiculous. I bet it cost about a 1/3 to manufacture them too. I'm sure there's a BMW tax built in, and we never think about the over head cost for manufacturing but still I think that most parts are very overpriced. Just like how it cost about $230 dollars to make an iPhone these days.

yeah i found the module on the ECS Tuning site. thanks. i have bought from getbmwparts.com. they quoted me a price of 850 for the airbag. seems like the wheel and the airbag are to most costly parts.

wonder since the F90 is about to come out, there will a drop in price on these parts.

$850 is a very good deal! Yeah hopefully we'll see some prices drop in the future.

For the 7849393 part number, used for the driver's assistance package... assuming this is an additional part needed for the retrofit, correct?

Thanks
Brad
