Cooling fan

As you guys already know, the cooling fans on the m5 stay running for an additional few minutes after shutting the engine down. I understand this relates to engine temperature etc. In the past I am sure my cooling fan used to become active 90% of the time when the engine was turned off. Just recently I have hardly noticed it except for the odd occasion. The fan only seems to run on a slow speed setting when i do hear it. I will test the system if necessary but would just like to hear what other people have to say before i do.

Thanks

Mine is the same, when it hardly comes on after just pottering around in it and at times not even at all.
When switching off after some spirited driving though it comes on at a higher speed for a few minutes then a slower speed as it eventually goes off.

That's how i would expect the system to work. I could have sworn it came on more often. Must have been in my head.

On a brighter note, I ordered myself some 5mm spacers.

to my experience the fan has 2 speeds. hi and low.

this is info from my bmw foreman: the fans are there so u dont have to idle for 5-10 mins to cool the turbos before shutoff for prolonged turbo life as you needed to do in older cars like supras, wrx, etc that didnt have turbo cooling fans. turbos want to be wet(oil) and cool. or theyll fry. BUT he said it is good practice to let thr car idle for 5 mins or so b4 shutoff in order to prolong the life of those fans ....- since him telling me that i always idle outside the garage for cooler air and more air than in the garage and i only get the low fan setting. and for only a few mins. i just watch my oil temp guage and when it drops as low as itll go and stays for a min, i shutoff.

This is info ive gathered from this forum: the electric coolant pump wont run as long as needed after shutoff if your battery is below 80%(get a trickle charger and keep it juiced up for that reason alone) or it will cook in the lines and clog etc..

MY QUESTION about those spacers.. is 5mm what is needed for a flush fit on the stock 20s? front and back? will my fenders need to be rolled?
and what brand spacers from where are the best? any performance downside?

I went with 5mm spacers as I'm running 305 and 275 tyres. Some people use 10mm rear and 15mm front on standard tyre sizes. You won't need to roll your arches. I went with some cheapo Ebay ones. £35 per pair with extended bolts. Doesn't matter so much with the 5mm as they don't have the hub centre on them. When you go 10mm or more you are better off going more expensive like eibach or h&r.

nice! ok one more question off topic..what are the complete tire sizes u are running 305/?? and 275/??... mine are 295/30zr20 and 265/35zr20 michelin ps4... ive read guys talking about 305 tires but why? whats the advantage? larger contact patch or better looking also? u have to have spacers to run your sizes? thanks in advance!

Tyre sizes are 305/30/20 and 275/35/20 Michelin PS4S. 305 offers a great improvement on traction, would definitely recommend. People recommend 275 with 305 for a few reasons that slip my mind at the moment. I.never noticed a problem when still running the 265s but got the 275 as they were actually cheaper. You don't have to run spacers with these tyre sizes, I'm doing it purely for looks.

Living in Dubai (Middle East) the cooling fan comes on every single time. In fact, I don't recall switching the car off and not hearing the cooling fan on.

That's about 64000 miles so about right with the daily use and for your drift school.
The other thing I'm itching to ask is how often you change your air filters.

Well with this climate you have to take care of the filters condition. We pretty mutch have several dusty days a month, so you're better off cleaning them at every service and replacing them every 20,000 km.

I recently bought BMC aftermarket filters just to get a tad bit of extra air flow

Thank you sir!

I'm actually an Engineer. Being a drift instructor is a voluntarily thing that I do with BMW Club UAE. It's not something I get paid for, it's pure joy

I can add another data point that my fans kick on after shut down 95% of the time, even in winter with cooler oil temp. They run on low and not for very long. I typically idle the engine for 1-2 minutes before shutting down when I have the convenience. I daily drive including while working, so I don't always have the time to sit there and idle. That said, the oil temps are always low when in this mode of driving... below the first dot.

Keeping the double thread theme going, I'm considering 305's in the rear for my summer tires (currently on winter Pirelli's). Sounds like people are recommending 275's in the front? Any noticeable drop in gas mileage or difference in daily handling?

If going 305s don't get anything but Michelin PS4S. As stated above, I only went 275 front because they worked out cheaper and I have noticed zero difference between the 2 so far. Not noticed a difference in fuel consumption either. The only downside to 305 tyres is MDM mode is not as fun.

I tried to actuate the cooling fans using our snap on machine but didn't have the option available to do so. I ran the battery test using the snap on via the Intelligent Battery Sensor. It showed that the battery was at around 60% and should be charged. The car is my daily driver so I cannot see this fixing my issue. Does anybody know the battery percentage allowed before things like start stop and the engine off cooling fan to be deactivated? I have noticed for a while now that the start stop will not function for maybe a week then one day will work on every stop for one journey then maybe not see it again for another week. I assume this is also related to battery strength.
