Overheating?

Happy New Year all,

I have a F85 (posting here because M5 folks are usually more technical) that's been fine until one day lazy driving around to get groceries, gas, etc. While waiting on line for gas, a warning flashed on the dash saying the car is overheating, to drive lightly. I think this is the same message you'd get during a track day with hard driving, except that I wasn't. No codes were thrown and the car went into limp mode. The water temp needle didn't move much from the usual spot of the dot between the two lines. I did receive a message on the dash again while trying to limp it home that the car is too hot and to shut it down immediately.

Is the car really overheating or a bad sensor? Anyone else experience this?

TIA!

M5's don't have coolant temp gauges just an oil temp gauge and warnings lights for high coolant temp.
How's your engine and charge cooling levels and the oil also, usually if it's faulty thermostat the car runs cool with it stuck open.
