Next Car Opinions

So I recently totaled my Lexus IS350 and I've been torn between what I want, what would be feasible, and what I "should" get.

I've been seriously considering 2013 M5 or 2013 650i Gran Coupe. I probably won't be driving either during the week and swap cars with my mother's Camry as I drive close to 50 miles a day to and from work, and she's not the most enthusiastic car driver around to say the least.

I got promoted earlier this year and things are shaping up for my professional career, which is why I am even entertaining either of these two cars.

Any words of wisdom for a young 25 year old?

Thanks,

Moe A.

I have an idea; a couple of posts from yours is a good deal on an M5 by a member here, soooma. I would pm him and look at his vehicle. Looks like a good deal and a painless way to get into a great car.

Although that's probably the most sound advice, I will need a car either way. Thanks

Dave - It looks like a great car, although I'm looking at the 13's with about 40K on them. Aftermarket lifetime warranty from a cousin that works at a local dealership would be a must.

Too early in your career to get a M5...

Plenty of other high performance cars out there. If you are 25, why do you need a car that big? A used E90 is a better buy and will let you save up as well.

If you can't afford to buy the car cash down without damaging your financial standing, it's a car you shouldn't have...

Good luck.

Take smaller steps, as every one says dude. I didn't get my first M5 until I was over 30 years old. Get something more affordable with less power and fun. E90/E92 M3 is a great starting point. You will learn to appreciate the NA engine before you get into Turbos, and the M3 is a much easier car to handle, you will definitely get in way less trouble with it. If I were you I'd shoot somewhere in the 30k to 45k price range. I advise you to stay away from the E60/E63 M5 and M6 due to them being maintenance and repair nightmares. The E92 M3 is a pretty solid car though. Or maybe even an Audi. S5's are great cars. The RS5 is even better and you still won't get into any trouble with that one. Or maybe even a used 997 Porsche Carrera S. You want a car that you can learn from, that way when you get into more expensive and more powerful cars, you won't have the desire to go full throttle or drift the car sideways as much, because you already got that out of your system with a cheaper car. Good luck young gun.

I'm biased, but I would suggest a new 335i 6MT or a slightly used Cayman S if you don't need the room. I had a lot of fun with both of those cars, and in a lot of ways miss being able to work the engine hard on public roads.

Test drove a 650i Gran coupe and a 550i M Sport. Considering those along with an E63 and possibly S5.

F10 M5 is a biting more than I should chew at this point.

Listen to people's advice in this thread and this side of forum.
Why do you need M5? If I were you (at your age) and would like to drive a BMW, I would go for a 3/4 series. F30 335 or F32 435 with M Sport package or F22 M235 are all you need... fun cars and powerful enough to drive...
Or you can get E92 M3 if you are looking for more fun.

The 650i and 550i seem too big and soft for someone your age. Maybe you need something with a lot of space? I guess we all different tastes, but I'd rather have something that handles better.

One of the best advises listed in the thread above - buy with cash and without damaging your financial picture. If you can't do it, you are not tray for this car.

To one of your earlier responses, it does not look like you "need" the car given that you'll be driving a different car all week long.

It wouldn't necessarily hurt me financially, but it would definitely make me give up a vice or two (gambling) . I'm readily putting 12-15K down and I net six figs annually. On top of that I own an investment property as well.

Size really doesn't bother me but I do enjoy a sportier drive - and that's why I started looking at the M5.

I'm willing to wait a year or a little over to have the 13's fall just under 50K. With that being said I want to get into a car that will retain as much value as possible without sacrificing performance. I was looking at the 550i and 650 for that very reason. I'm afraid once the G30's drop that would further deplete the value of a 550i with higher than average mileage. Maybe I should have provided more information in my initial post. I'm not some kid looking to blow every dollar he has saved on a whip but I appreciate the honest input

My point was not your money. It is your age... neither of these cars (M5/550/650) are designed and manufactured for your age, but it's your money and your decision... you just asked people for advice and they gave you...goodluck

Thanks, I ended up picking up a 2013 550i M Sport. I'll eventually make the transition into an M Series.

Update:

I just got offered a 13' M5 with around 40K for 48.5K! One owner, clean carfax. I hate myself right now for buying the 550i. They're only willing to give me a 32K trade in value when I paid more than 37K a little over a week ago. I hate myself right now.

This proves why you shouldn't be spending lots of money on cars.
