911 + BMW
So I currently drive a 2017 991.2 911 S Cab. Been wanting one for a long time and got one. Such a fun car to drive! However, I have young kids that are growing up and need to get a 4 door car now. Going to keep the 911 but i've gotten so used to how fun it is to drive the 911 that I want something that is just as fun to drive if not close enough in a sedan. Do you think that the F 10 BMW M5 will be almost similar to the 911 in terms of fun to drive factor?

Definitely two completely different animals. My friend just picked up a 2017 911 Turbo S. I havnt had a chance to drive it, yet. In terms of speed, we were about even from a highway pull. I'm guessing in the corners the 911 feels more secure. The M5 can still hang with tiny sport cars but you'll feel some body roll. But you can also have 4 grown adults while doing it (and Costco groceries).
One thing; a lowered M5 and stock height M5 feel different in the corners so might be worth lowering it |

Hmmm. I've had both, currently have 981 Spyder and F10 M5 Comp MT.
The Porsches are in a league of their own,. I two ways about it. Their main goal is driver enjoyment. All other activities, such as a daily driveability, or ability to carry a passenger or two, are secondary. The BMW is more of a compromise. They've done a damn good job with the F10, imo, especially if you're partial to speed and muscle cars. I had a Shelby Mustang before this that I rarely drove because it was really only hood for one thing. The M5 is fast, actually scary fast, but can also be used to take a family out to dinner, to drag race a kid in a WRX, or to enjoy some twisty mountain roads. The one downside is gas mileage - not so good, but could also be a lot worse. |

Alot of it depends on what are you looking for and your expectations. The M5 will give you speed and space for your family, even on extremely long drives. The 911 has a different thrill to it, which to me is watered down (based on the scale of fun you seek this can be upto 50%) in an M5.
I agree with the above comment 100% also because a M5 is not trying to be the 911. I have never enjoyed the M5 as I used to enjoy my 997.1 C4S. This is why I kept my 996 GT3 during my M5 ownership. That being said, the M5 is one of the better family sedans which balances my inner boy racer, kid-friendly space and in-law practicality for my current needs. Which is where I adore it. I also own a 6MT, ZCP and semi-tuned version of the car. In my opinion the 911 to M5 is not an apples to apples comparison. For the pure thrill, you will be left wanting for more in an M5 (my personal opinion only).

I have both.
I've had my 911 for 10 years and won't part with it. My M5 is wonderfully different. In a straight line, the M5 is much faster. The chassis on the 911 is true sports car. In the twisty bits the 911 mullers the M5. They're both great fun but in very different ways. 20190812_134327 by , on Flickr Last edited by PoolCar; 05-24-2020 at 03:02 AM.. |

I actually traded in my first F10 M5 for a 997.1 C4S Cab
As everyone else said, you really can't compare the two cars. The 911 was raw, light on its feet and handled like it was on rails, was an absolute blast to drive. But was horrible for daily driving and once I needed to put someone or something other than myself in the car it was useless. The F10 (I'm on my second) is luxurious, comfortable, very quick and puts a smile on my face every-time i drive it. It's really the best of both worlds. I put my kid's car seats in the M5 all the time and they have plenty of space, my daughter loves to egg me on and push the car a-little bit for some fun. If I had the space to keep both I would have. The F10 is probably my favorite daily driver I've had, while the 911 is a fantastic weekend car.

Not sure I can live without either......(///M or the 911)
Although the X5 ///M is not equal to the F10 ///M5, where my F10 N55 is an econo-box daily driver....the X5 ///M has it's utility and makes chores to Costco bearable....and use the 911 to cruise Highway 1 to our favorite eateries in Carlsbad with the top down.... |

If you can only get one Porsche, get a high level Boxster of some kind. Once you drive the mid-engine platform, it ruins the 911 somewhat. Inherently handles so much better.
