I wonder where these guys are getting their information? They are claiming that AWD will be optional, power output will be 626hp, and weight will be dropped by about 100kg. Interesting, but I take their information with a grain of salt.

Either way, it's nice to know that the next M5 is well on its way, but every time I hear that it's going to have the same V8 TT setup as the F10 my heart sinks and I'm already disappointed. I know it's too early to judge, but I feel like I'm the only one who cares that M is too lazy to design or is not allowed to design a whole new generation of high performance engine for the Flagship M car of BMW. Interesting times are ahead that's for sure.

I hope the one grain of salt that stays on the table is the "possibility of an M5 Touring."

If they give me a wagon I will overlook the lack of a new power plant.

They probably got it from Sport Auto, I saw SA reported a few days ago that the next M5 will likely lose 100kg on the chassis (hopefully won't be put back on with additional new features) and 600HP+ with the same power plant (or variation of).

Everyone is going the turbo route including Ferrari, and BMW already has a good one and is milking it.

I understand that everyone is going turbo these days and in the future. I can't help but feel that this next generation M5 marks the beginning of the end of internal combustion engine development for the ///M Brand. Never again are we going to see another truly innovative design like the S85 from ///M. I also understand that by not developing a whole new engine BMW is saving millions in R&D costs, but they are killing the essence of the car I tell you. I don't even care if they design a new kind of turbo engine, just make something different and more exciting. I know that the S63tu has a lot of untapped potential, you could probably run that engine with 800hp for 200,000 miles no problem, but where's the excitement of running the same engine with the same characteristics and the same sound for 10-12 years. I just can't drive a car in the future with the same engine as I have now. Not unless they did a complete redesign of the V8 TT design itself.

Agree, engine will always be the heart and soul of the m5. How can you have a new generation m5 with the old generation engine? It would feel like a modified f10!!

Same engine

E34 engine was an evolution of the E28. Obviously the E39 and E60 engines were stand alone engines. The F10 engine is shared with the XM5 and XM6...which in itself is a travesty. Just like when every new M car that comes out everyone complains and moans and then buy into the new car. The next M5 is three or four model years away in the US anyway....

S63 is a variation of N63, which debuted on 2008 in the X6 50i, so one could say it was never a "proper" M engine.

Sometime between the July 2018 and Decenber 2018. I'm not sure yet if they will offer it to the US Market for the first model year, they never have, but they did release the F8x M3/M4 to all world makers at the same time back in 2014, so anything is still possible. The new 5-Series will debut probably this summer and go into production in October or November this year.

It is true the E28 and E34 shared the same configuration, but those engines were not that complicated back then, and both of those generations did not have massive production numbers. Plus the M5 wasn't as big of an icon back then as it is today. I am curious to see where the F10 M5 falls when production stops this October. Almost 20,000 E60 M5's were built between the Sedan and Wagon. I wonder if the F10 M5 will exceed those numbers.

Next M5

The real problem with the future of this car is the price point. I bet the next version is close to 150K loaded.

that sure will be one hell of a power plant in a lighter and AWD saloon that we all agree has a superb engine. if it aint broke and all that....

it looks like they are borrowing the new 666 M3/4 comp pack alloys too.

but why oh why don't they make it look just a little bit sporty? give it some flared arches, bonnet vents, bonnet bulges. something pleeeeease!!!

I completely disagree with that statement. When the E28 came out, it had specs that were completely unheard of on a business sedan. I'd argue that if anything, the F10 is nothing THAT special in comparison.

Regarding this new car, I think it's far too early to count it out for a few reasons. We still don't know what they'll do to this engine. What if it has water injection from the M4 GTS? It'll be lighter and off the line with Xdrive, this thing should be seriously quick. I'm far more excited about this next car than the current one personally.

Unfortunately, as someone else said in this thread, the price will be eyewatering and completely out of my league anyway.

and then they will cancel this as soon as my hopes are up. If audi hasn't sent their avants over, i doubt BMW will.

Next generation ///M5

Just like all the previous iterations the new M5 will be a beast and the measuring stick for every other super saloon. This moniker created the segment and still owns it IMHO. Benz, Audi, Cadillac, Jag etc. all want to create the following the ///M5 has and so far have fallen short. The closest competitor is the E63S AMG (which I own) and even that in ultra cool wagon form misses the mark. If the next car were to be lighter with the exact same engine it would be a winner.

Emissions! It's actually a great thing that BMW is able to retain the 4.4L and make it even better. Had they not spent all that money on the i division, they would not have the benefit of their impressive average fuel consumption for the fleet. If they were to create something new it would be right there with Audi and Mercedes with another 4L. The emissions laws are forcing all manufacturers to create smaller turbo charged engines to remain legal and compliant with the government. However, those engineers from said rivals based their design on the M engine. The turbo placement is the most obvious, and although the sound of those engines from the interior sound amazing, the M sounds way better from the outside. Even aftermarket exhausts for the AMG GT don't sound that good when compared to aftermarket M exhausts and DP's. The weight is also right on target with the carbon core chassis, cfrp drive shaft, trunk and hood, and hopefully a roof this time, all possible thanks to the ownership and mass production by SGL group. Now if RWD is true, the car could weigh under 4K lbs! The power isn't far fetched either, assuming Bmw continues to underrate the power by 50 to 70 hp lol. All good things baby!

You make excellent points, but I'm still convinced that M could have designed a 3.0L Twin Turbo V10 that is more fuel efficient than the S63tu. They could have even used the same design architecture on the small V10 where the turbos are placed in the V of the engine. I'm sure Audi and Mercedes would copy that design too. Lol!
