No more M4- Picked up my 10th AMG: C63S Coupe

Yes indeed my 10th one and it all started a long time ago with a sweet 2001 E55. Along the way I've had some tremendous rides and have held on to my two faves: 16 AMG GTS and the C63 BS. I recently had an F82 M4 and wanted a change to a more raw loud beast with a better interior and I got exactly that with the C63S Coupe. A few mods later and its pretty much set. I did one test drive and then had my dealer locate what I wanted, for the most part and took the car.

Some initial thoughts: The MCT on this car (I've had 5 others) is the best one thus far. Ill assume it has a lot to do with the drive modes and the ECU/TCU because I always felt the MCT was a bit sluggish. This car is not the case and the transmission performs very well. There are times where I can't even discern the difference between it and the DCT in the GTS. Sport Plus really understands where the car should be (in D mode during traffic) and its always got the power ready and available. Finally proper transmission electronics are mated up with the MCT. Now I have tuned the car and it really moves- the M177 engine is no slouch already and it feels almost as fast as my tuned M178 GTS. The throttle and the tq on tap in the USABLE ranges of the rpms is awesome and I never feel like I'm in the wrong gear (in D mode). It just flat out flies and I do think the tune helps the MCT in response.

For the first few hundred miles my car was on stock suspension and the car did feel very stiff; even moreso than my GTS which has the magnetorheological dampeners. It was, at times, a bit of a kidney punch and bouncy. I opted to keep the OEM dampeners and use the KW HAS system. I have used this system many times in the past and have zero regrets. I think on this car its probably the best yet. I have a more extreme drop (1 1/2 inches still remain in the front shockingly and the back is maxed out) and the car is more compliant and comfortable than it was stock. It really feels that much better and more planted vs the compression and rebound (excessive) that was coming with the stock springs. I run the car in the sport suspension set up (1 light on) and its optimal for my needs. I am very pleased because AMG suspensions have not always left me wanting more (sans the GTS and BS).

The interior is great, like my GTS and very comfortable. The car my dealer sourced had to have the P3 package, Performance Exhaust, Night Styling, and the AMG carbon fiber adds. At first I thought I might regret not getting the Performance seats but I'm very happy with the comfort of the Sport seats. They do lack a little bit of lateral support which I'm used to in my other rides but its a GT car in reality for cruising and crushing. Oh the car had a 91k msrp.

Is the car faster than my departed M4? Yes it was stock vs stock and yes tuned vs tuned. It probably was just a slight bit slower than my tuned M4 before I tuned it. I really enjoy the steering feel in the C63S over the M4. The M had a bit of moderate oversteer and this car has minimal at best. Again it compares well with the steering in the GTS. I am happy with my choice for a daily abuser/commuter and it will match up well with my M5 for basic day to day driving.

Initial basic mods:

KW HAS Sleeves
OE Tuning M177 ECU Tune
18mm spacers front and rear
30% Ceramic Tint
Xpel Clear Bra

Many thanks to Benzworks in Huntington Beach, CA. They are a sponsor here and quickly sourced my springs and installed the tune too. They have been my Benz go to since 2007 and much more (other makes that Ive had or have). The ECU I heard was a PITA to pull but they have done many and had no issues. Supremepower in Placentia, CA sourced the spacers and Eric the owner is a top tier guy allowing me to try on different ones until I picked what I wanted. If you are local or even out of state I recommend using him and Benzworks for your part sourcing. OE Tuning has been tuning all my Benzes, some Porsches, Bentley, Ferrari, M cars, and a few others since 2004. I trust Jeremy (owner) with his product and service. Ive probably done over 30 tunes (including upgrades on the same cars) and remain loyal to him especially when it comes to Benz. The gains in tq and hp thru the sweet spot ranges are so good; the car is transformed and dare I say that with 503 SAE HP in stock set up.

Cell phone pics:

And my departed M4 (not too shaby)

Ahh.. I miss my white girl. Had the ED1 and I can attest to the stiffness of the OEM suspension.

I thought the ICE was better than the M3/4 as well. It was a piece of cake to upload a specific route in a NAV via SD card from Google Maps or other GPS apps that exports.

Now Vic can give us how does the acceleration feel compare to the M5 (though the C63S already tuned). Based on C&D, this car trapped 123 for quarter mile.

Nice car. And your favorite color too.

How does the AMG HUD compare with BMWs?

How is the traction and driveability?

Oh snap. Vic is back at it! That's one of my favorite AMG's to date. I do like this one better than the M4 for the street. You did well Vic.

that does look pretty sweet Vic. and of course in your customary white paint, it looks truly menacing. good job

are those wheels stock and available from merc direct or did you special order? is it standard these days to have 20 inch on the rear and 19's on the front? better handling perhaps like on most supercars...?

I dont have any personal tuned numbers but others are hitting the 126 to 127mph range in the quarter or a little more. It feels every bit that fast. My M5 is tuned and will pull on the C63S from a roll if, and I say if, the tires are warmed up and the elements are favorable because a tuned M5 is a wheel traction nightmare at times.

So the HUD is good but not as bright or clear as the M's especially at night. Im glad I got it though (only comes in the P3 package). The rpm range is not so definitive (for a lack of a better word) than the M's bright multi color display. The M is better.

Driveability is great, tons of torque but a reasonable diff to keep it in line too with not too much loss of traction like my M5. Dig runs are relatively easy even with the tune and the car just always feels in the right gear when I need it to be especially in the 60 to 70 mph range with open road ahead = 130 mph comes fast. Benz has the electronics dialed pretty good here and the tune really wakes the car up to make it a beast. The exhaust is just awesome and even in S+ Drive mode it down shifts and barks like a mad ass dog.

Thanks Mate, indeed they are stock (but an upgrade/forged) with 19x9 up front and 20x10.5 in the rear. OEM rubber is 265x35 and 285x30 but they could and should have used 295 out back. I really dont know why many brands are doing that now but its the same on my GTS too.

Some minor adjustments:

plasti dipped the badges and wrapped that small rear roof panel in black:

Yep, it was more of a .... queen

Im totally joking; the M4 is a great car but I wanted more of a beast and the C63S is that. (scalpel vs hammer)

I remember we discussed M6 Coupe vs C63S Coupe recently, ignoring the resale aspect, now that you've spent more time in the C63S any more thoughts comparing the two?

I think I gave my insights from the test drive (albeit a long one) and Im still very happy with the AMG.

My M6 experience ended back in Jan of 2014 (after 1 year) so its been a while. I do think both cars are very attractive and eye catching. In stock set up the M6 is faster up top and the AMG launches easier and more confidently. The interior is very nice in the M6 but the price point also dictates as such. But, the C63S does have a nice set up inside too. I really like the auto mode in the AMG because this is more or less my daily use car along with the M5. The mode is very intuitive and also shifts down as my speeds reduce, at the right times. The M has the better tranny but like I said on my first post; the AMG has done some marked improvements to make the driveability even better. I really love the sound of the Hot V setup engine in the 4.0 AMG and it feels so strong down low with the tq coupled with no lag. The AMG is the easier car to drive IMHO and feels much smaller than its weight.

The M is long in the tooth though and the next one will be awesome like the past 2 gens which I owned. Part of why I love the AMG is the amazing sounds it exudes as well and I have to say that in today's market I'm glad we have the opportunity to get such amazing performers like the M4 and the C63S coupe at the price points that they have. I also have been eyeing that new Alfa and the reviews early on are quite favorable.

Lots of drift time with 100% confidence. The only issue this car has (beside the comforty seats) is the lack of power and torque

He doesnt care about you.

Just tune it and the power and tq will help you "drift" away...

Congrats on the new car and awesome reviews.
I was also looking at m3 and c63s sedan before I bought my m3.
I need a four door for my daily use, then the m3 styling appears more on me than the C63 sedan.
Personally, for the coupe versions, C63 is far better looking than the M4.

I agree here 100%--- the M3 is better looking than the C63 Sedan. It is more aggressive and just doesnt fall into the sedan redundancy that Benz has created.
